Match Preview
Sevilla and Dortmund set for Euro showdown Struggling Sevilla go in search of a much-needed boost on Wednesday night when they face a winner-takes-all Europa League showdown with in-form Borussia Dortmund at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Sevilla hold the slight upper hand heading into the contest, lying second behind already-qualified Paris St Germain in Group J and a point above Dortmund in third spot. A draw would therefore see the 2006 and 2007 UEFA Cup winners progress through to the last 32 at the expense of the German outfit, but to do that Sevilla will need to break their recent miserable run of form and end Dortmund's own winning streak. Sunday's 3-1 home loss to second-bottom Almeria in La Liga was Sevilla's fifth successive defeat in all competitions and their third on the trot at the Sanchez Pizjuan. It also dropped Gregorio Manzano's side down to 11th in the Primera Division standings and closer to the relegation places than the Champions League spots in terms of points. Defender Julien Escude said: "It's a difficult situation and one that's new for more or less all the players. "We have to take it game by game and the next one is against Dortmund. "We only need one victory to help us and that could happen on Wednesday. We've already beaten them away, where we defended and suffered a lot and came away with three points against an opponent who were in very good form. "We need points and confidence, and for this we need to work hard and calmly, even though all the talk surrounding us is of pressure and 'finals'." While Sevilla are freefalling down the Primera Division table in Spain, Dortmund are flying high at the top of the Bundesliga standings, lying a massive 11 points clear at the summit. Dortmund have won their last seven games in all competitions and need an eighth to remain in European competition beyond Christmas. "We want to win, and then we really can celebrate the festive season," said the club's general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke. Dortmund's future in Europe looked bleak after back-to-back draws with Paris St Germain left them relying on results elsewhere to keep them in with a chance of still qualifying for the last 32. A win over Karpaty Lviv a fortnight ago and PSG's win over Sevilla has given them this opportunity in Andalucia and defender Mats Hummels is confident that they are going to take it. "I am absolutely convinced that we will win in Sevilla and go through," he told Kicker magazine. "We wanted this final and we now have it. "Our home game against Sevilla was one of our best games of the season, but that did not come through with the result. "Certainly we have the chance and the quality to succeed in Spain." Dortmund have not lost a single match away from their Westfalenstadion home this season and that will fill them with confidence for Wednesday night. However, coach Jurgen Klopp may be without his influential midfielder Nuri Sahin, who picked up a groin strain in the 2-0 win over Werder Bremen at the weekend. Antonio Da Silva is a candidate to replace him while reported Real Madrid target Lucas Barrios should be fit to lead the Dortmund attack with Robert Lewandowski on standby to replace him should he not be passed fit.

Match Report
Draw sees Sevilla through Sevilla put aside their miserable recent run of form to gain the point they needed against Borussia Dortmund to secure their place in the last 32 of the Europa League, with the German side exiting the competition. The Spanish outfit, UEFA Cup winners in 2006 and 2007, came into the game on the back of five successive defeats and they suffered a nightmare start as they went behind inside four minutes to a goal from Shinji Kagawa. However, Gregorio Manzano's men hit back with quickfire goals from Ndri Romaric and Frederic Kanoute, and although runaway Bundesliga leaders Dortmund drew level in the 49th minute through Neven Subotic, it was not enough to deny the hosts who progress in second place in Group J behind Paris St Germain. Knowing anything other than a win would see them eliminated, in-form Dortmund - with seven successive wins behind them and without an away defeat all season - enjoyed the perfect start when Kagawa's drive from the edge of the box found its way past Andres Palop. With confidence already fragile, that was exactly the start the home side would have been hoping to avoid, but they bounced back in impressive fashion at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. Ndri Romaric brought a brilliant finger-tip save out of Roman Weidenfeller in the 15th minute, before the Dortmund captain produced a superb double stop 60 seconds later to deny both Alexis and Kanoute. Weidenfeller was powerless in the 30th minute though as Sevilla drew level following a defensive error by Lukasz Piszczek. Piszczek really should have cleared the danger following a Kanoute cross, but he mis-kicked the ball straight into Romaric's path and the Ivory Coast international stabbed home from 12 yards out. Lucas Barrios had a half-chance to put Dortmund back in front straight away but he headed wide, and three minutes after that Sevilla were in front through captain Kanoute. Diego Perotti curled the ball into area and Kanoute, standing by the penalty spot, climbed highest to glance a header just inside the far post. Sevilla were unable to keep hold of that lead though, with Dortmund levelling the scores up at 2-2 four minutes after the break. Mats Hummels swung over a cross from the right and Subotic beat Alexis in the air to power a header past Didier Zokora on the goalline. That gave Dortmund virtually the whole of the second half to find a winning goal that would have sent them through, and Mario Goetze almost got it in the closing stages after beating the outrushing Palop to a cross on the edge of the Sevilla box. Fortunately for the home side Palop just managed to get a hand on Goetze's header to slow it up, and the Sevilla defence got back to clear the danger as the Andalusian outfit held on for a priceless point.
