Match Preview

Trio return for Iron Scunthorpe could be boosted by the return of Paul Reid, Shane Duffy and Andy Barcham for the home game with Hartlepool. Reid missed last week's goalless FA Cup tie at AFC Wimbledon due to a groin strain and fellow central defender Duffy was on international duty with the Republic of Ireland Under-21s. Niall Canavan and Michael Nelson filled the void and will hope to keep their places. Winger Barcham has been sidelined for two games with a calf injury but returned to full training this week and is hoping to be in contention. Manager Alan Knill could still be without Jimmy Ryan as the midfielder is struggling with a calf strain as he works his way back from the knee injury that has kept him out since mid-September. Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone is hoping to play some part. He returned as an unused substitute last week after recovering from a dislocated finger and Knill must decide whether to recall him or retain Sam Slocombe. Striker Jordan Robertson (broken ankle) was back on the bench last week but will not be rushed back. Matt Godden (hip/hernia) and Josh Lillis (knee) remain long-term absentees. Hartlepool goalkeeper Andy Rafferty will make only his second start for the club in place of suspended team-mate Scott Flinders. Flinders sits out a one-game ban following his straight red card in last week's home FA Cup defeat to Stevenage so Rafferty, who went on as a substitute, will deputise. Manager Mick Wadsworth has been dealt a blow with news this week that strikers Colin Nish and Colin Larkin will be sidelined for several weeks as they both require knee surgery. Wadsworth must decide whether to recall midfielder Paul Murray to the starting line-up after he missed out last week through suspension. Winger Nolberto Solano returned to the side against Stevenage after a five-game lay-off due to a hamstring injury but was withdrawn after an hour and will be hoping to last the full 90 minutes if retained in the starting line-up.

Match Report

Pools enjoy another away day Hartlepool's excellent away form continued with a 2-0 victory at Scunthorpe, who are still struggling at home. The visitors, beaten only once on their travels in the league this season, took charge of the game from the start. Antony Sweeney went close with an early header before striker Andy Monkhouse fired them in front in the 21st minute, drilling a shot from the edge of the box into the bottom corner past keeper Sam Slocombe. Two minutes later Hartlepool nearly struck again with an excellent long-range effort from James Poole which was tipped over by Slocombe. Monkhouse missed a golden chance to double their advantage when he headed wide with the goal at his mercy from a cross by Evan Horwood in the 37th minute. Booed off by their own fans at half-time, Scunthorpe huffed and puffed in the second half but never mustered a worthwhile effort at goal. It was Hartlepool who struck again after 77 minutes when Sweeney headed home at the near post from a cross by Evan Horwood to condemn Scunthorpe to a third home defeat of the season.
