Match Report

Scotland's dismal record in Hampden friendlies continued as Walter Smith's men were held to a 1-1 draw by an efficient and highly organised United States side.

It is now more than nine years since the Scots won a friendly international at their National Stadium, a statistic which never looked like being challenged as the home side laboured against the transatlantic visitors, who were superior in every department.
The game began badly for Scotland as they conceded a goal after only nine minutes. PSV Eindhoven striker DaMarcus Beasley chased a throughball across the penalty area before being upended by Scotland captain Christian Dailly, resulting in a penalty kick and a yellow card for the West Ham defender.

Josh Wolff of Kansas City Wizards made no mistake from the penalty spot to give his country the lead.

Scotland were completely outplayed for the next 20 minutes, with USA goalkeeper Kasey Keller being called into action only to deal with a wayward back pass from Gregg Berhalter.

But after 37 minutes the former Tottenham star was picking the ball out of the net after Andy Webster had headed home from Graham Alexander's free-kick, in what was Scotland's first serious attack of the game.

The introduction of James McFadden after an hour helped the Scots increase the tempo as they pushed for a winner, but the Americans always appeared capable of maintaining control of proceedings and seemed happy to hold out for a draw - an objective they achieved with a certain degree of comfort.
