Match Report

Scotland pulled off a major shock at Hampden Park as they saw off World Cup finalists France 1-0 to make it three wins out of three in Euro 2008 qualifiers.

Celtic defender Gary Caldwell was the hero of the hour for Walter Smith's side, stabbing home the only goal of the game midway through the second half following a Paul Hartley corner.

France had dominated possession, but Smith's side worked hard throughout and in the end held on for a famous victory.

Scotland had a let-off in the 17h minute when Patrick Vieira headed home a Franck Ribery free-kick, but the France captain saw his effort ruled out for offside.

Then David Trezeguet was left to rue another flag from the assistant referee after he found the back of the net with an acrobatic overhead kick.

After that the visitors seemed to lose their early fluency and after Craig Gordon had parried a Florent Malouda strike from distance, James McFadden could have opened the scoring when he ghosted on to the end of Darren Fletcher's pass, but screwed his shot wide.

However, Scotland was growing in confidence and the home fans were rewarded in the 67th minute when Caldwell shocked the visitors with the only goal of the game.

Hartley swung in a corner from the right and, with the France defence static, Caldwell slid home from eight yards.
