Match Preview

Schalke close in on qualification Schalke are aiming to secure their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League having put their house in order in the Bundesliga. The Royal Blues have picked up seven points in their last three league matches to move away from immediate danger at the bottom, and victory over Lyon at the Arena AufSchalke could see them clinch their ticket for the last 16 of the Champions League with a match to spare. For that to happen, Benfica would also have to lose against Hapoel Tel Aviv, otherwise the stage will be set for a decider in Portugal in a fortnight. "We will do all we can to remain in the Champions League over the winter," said midfielder Peer Kluge on the Schalke website. "This competition is an absolute highlight for every footballer." Kluge knows it is not going to be easy against Les Gones, who reached the semi-finals last season. "In my opinion, Lyon are the strongest opponents in our group," he said. "I would say they are just a bit better than Benfica. "Lyon have shown what technical potential they have in recent years. "They have a lot of experience in the Champions League and it is no coincidence that they were in the semi-finals last season. "But that doesn't have to mean anything because we can still beat them." According to Lyon's president Jean-Michel Aulas, Schalke have a good chance of doing just that. He has complained about his side's packed calendar which, despite being profitable for them recently, puts them at a disadvantage when it comes to the encounter, and then again against Paris St Germain at the weekend. "We have a complicated week and you can say that we are going to go into our games a bit weaker than our opponents," he said on his club's television channel. "We play on Wednesday against Schalke, who played their last game on Saturday while we didn't finish our last Ligue 1 match until 2215 on Sunday night. "Then we go to Paris on Sunday at the end of a week in which, unfortunately, PSG don't have a Europa League match." Raul will lead the Schalke attack, buoyed by a hat-trick in the Bundesliga on Saturday and with the all-time top goalscoring record in European competitions within his sights. AC Milan's Filippo Inzaghi overtook him and Gerd Muller in the standings with his two goals on matchday four, but the Spaniard is just one goal behind.

Match Report

Schale blitz Lyon A fantastic first-half performance saw Schalke record a 3-0 win and qualify for the Champions League's last 16 along with opponents Lyon. Goals from Jefferson Farfan and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar rewarded their side's early dominance, the latter adding a third late on. And Hapoel Tel-Aviv's 3-0 upset of Benfica sent both these sides through with a game to spare - Lyon courtesy of their superior head-to-head record against the Portuguese. Visiting keeper Hugo Lloris was called into action early on to take a low cross from Farfan, who then failed to take advantage of Aly Cissokho's error on a counter-attack. The hosts were starting brightly in front of a noisy crowd of 60,013 in Gelsenkirchen and Huntelaar headed Farfan's corner over. A rare Lyon attack saw Lisandro Lopez go through on goal, but Manuel Neuer's somewhat panicky punch and Benedikt Howedes' excellent subsequent tackle launched a sparkling counter-attack involving neat flicks from Farfan and Raul which ended with Lloris gathering Jurado's long-range half-volley. The Germans took a deserved lead when, after seizing on Pape Diakhate's mistake, Raul saw his shot closed down by the Senegal defender but the loose ball broke for the impressive Farfan to calmly stroke home. Lisandro wasted a chance to equalise when defensive confusion allowed Jimmy Briand to turn the ball into his path, the Argentina international stepping inside Christoph Metzelder but failing to get sufficient power behind his shot. Neuer made a fine low save as Michel Bastos met Yoann Gourcuff's corner with a volley - and Schalke swiftly made it 2-0. Peer Kluge linked up with Jurado and produced a perfectly-weighted diagonal pass for Huntelaar to finish low past Lloris, still with only 20 minutes on the clock. Farfan was booked for diving - earning a suspension - after going over Lloris' challenge and the France keeper then had to back-pedal sharply to tip over the irrepressible Raul's instinctive long-range lob. Lisandro was unluckier to see penalty appeals dismissed when he appeared to be bundled over by Lukas Schmitz, although he too made the most of the challenge. Lyon introduced forward Bafetimbi Gomis in place of Cissokho at the interval and Michel Bastos' cross flashed dangerously across the box early in the second period. Jurado shot over before Metzelder's challenge saw Gourcuff depart on a stretcher after lengthy treatment to his ankle. Miralem Pjanic was his replacement and the Bosnia and Herzegovina international soon lashed a free-kick wide from nearly 40 yards. Edu replaced Farfan and marked his arrival by flattening Michel Bastos, the free-kick leading to another chance wasted by the ineffective Lisandro. Kallstrom failed to connect properly with an acrobatic but hopelessly ambitious volley before lively youngster Jeremy Pied replaced Lisandro. The Sweden midfielder went closer with a 35-yard drive which Neuer bizarrely slid and sidefooted wide before Jeremy Toulalan, after a number of physical challenges, was finally booked for sliding in late on Jurado. Huntelaar's well-struck drive was held at the second attempt by Lloris but the Holland frontman was not to be denied his second as his shot deflected off Anthony Reveillere to leave Lloris helpless. Pied flashed a volley wide and Neuer saved from Gomis as Lyon were denied a late consolation.
