Match Preview
Samp eyeing a return to form Sampdoria will look to end their poor run of form when they take on Europa League Group I rivals Debrecen. Both teams head into the clash at Luigi Ferraris Stadium looking to record their first triumph in the competition this season. Sampdoria have not tasted victory since their 2-0 triumph on the opening day of the Serie A season against Lazio on August 29. Four draws in five games have followed for Domenico Di Carlo's side, including a 1-1 draw at PSV Eindhoven in their group opener. Sunday's goalless result against rock-bottom Udinese left Samp in 12th place in Serie A. "It's a pity we were not able to collect three points," said Sampdoria defender Fabrizio Cacciatore. "A victory against Udinese would have given us a big boost in confidence ahead of Thursday's game against Debrecen. "But there are no easy games and we just have to keep working. "Results have not gone our way lately but there is no reason to panic. "We have a good group and we want to do well this season. "We now hope to give our fans some joy in Europe and take an important result against Debrecen." Lack of goalscoring has been Samp's main problem, with just one goal struck in their last three encounters. Di Carlo will have all of his players available and will be hoping attacking pair Antonio Cassano and Giampaolo Pazzini can deliver in front of goal. Samp will nevertheless be confident they can take a positive result against Debrecen having lost just one of their last 14 home games in Europe - their last defeat dates back to the 2008-09 campaign, when they lost 1-0 to FC Metalist Kharkiv. Debrecen travel to Genoa having also endured a difficult start to their campaign. Saturday's 4-1 league defeat at Siofok marked their third game without a win. The result dropped Debrecen to eighth in the Hungarian First League, six points behind leaders Videoton FC after eight games. Andras Herczeg's men will also want to bounce back from their 4-1 hammering at the hands of Metalist in their group opener earlier this month.

Match Report
Nervy Samp beat Debrecen Sampdoria ended their month-long wait for a victory with a nervy 1-0 win over Debrecen that took them joint top of Europa League Group I. Italy striker Giampaolo Pazzini scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 18th minute, while he, Daniele Mannini and Antonio Cassano all wasted chances to kill the tie. Samp, who had not won since the opening day of the Serie A season, almost paid the price late on when Dejan Simac went close. But they held on to join PSV Eindhoven on four points at the summit. On paper, Debrecen were the ideal opponents for a side looking to end a long run without victory. The visitors were thrashed 5-0 at home by Metalist Kharkiv in their Group I opener, while they arrived in Genoa on the back of a 4-1 league defeat at Siofok. But they had arguably had the better of a cagey opening tonight and Peter Szakaly tested Gianluca Curci from long range. But their good work was undone when they conceded a penalty in the 17th minute. Cassano swung in a corner and Mirsad Mijadinoski was adjudged to have fouled Pazzini, who picked up the ball himself and despatched his spot-kick low beyond Mindaugas Malinauskas. Both sides failed from distance but Mannini might have made it 2-0 10 minutes before the break when he sent another Cassano corner over the top. Debrecen threw on Tamas Kulcsar for Szakaly at half-time and the change almost paid off when Ondoa Yannick shot too close to Curci. Pazzini had two chances in three minutes to grab his second goal, first heading Mannini's corner over the top and then dragging wide from 12 yards. Cassano then sent a close-range shot straight at Malinauskas from Vladimir Koman's corner. Simac might have levelled nine minutes from time when he headed Czvitkovics' corner over the top but Pazzini almost had the final say when he shot over.
