Match Preview

Branston pickle for Millers Rotherham will be without the suspended Guy Branston for their home clash with Shrewsbury. The on-loan centre-half was shown a straight red card less than an hour into his second Millers debut in the 5-2 thrashing at Bristol Rovers last Friday and he now serves a three-match ban. In addition to that suspension, Branston is also ineligible for the clash with parent club Bradford and the FA Cup first round in November, meaning he will be missing for the next five matches. That forces manager Andy Scott into again shuffling his defensive line-up and with Ryan Cresswell, who has started running again after ankle ligament damage, also sidelined, it means Michael Raynes, Troy Brown and Johnny Mullins are vying for two spots in the centre of defence. Defender Jon Harley is set to make his home debut following a loan move from Notts County last week but Mark Bradley (shoulder) is a long-term absentee. The Millers will be desperate to end an alarming slide having lost the last five matches in all competitions. Shrewsbury boss Graham Turner may ring the changes ahead of the clash. The Shrews have lost two of their last three matches in League Two but remain in the play-off positions. Turner used a behind-closed-doors friendly with Cardiff on Tuesday as a platform for his fringe players to show their abilities. Striker James Collins will be pushing for a place in the starting line-up after dropping to the bench in their last two games. Carl Regan may be considered after coming through that friendly unscathed but Turner may give the defender more time to regain his fitness. Reuben Hazell is the only long-term absentee with a knee injury.

Match Report

Spoils shared at Don Valley Rotherham ended their run of six games without a win in their 1-1 draw with Shrewsbury, but it was a disappointing display from two promotion favourites. The Millers overcame an early injury scare when Dale Tonge had to leave the field after only 10 minutes for stitches to a head injury and caused lots of problems for the Shrewsbury defence. After 18 minutes, Danny Schofield blasted a shot into the side netting and four minutes later Rotherham were ahead thanks to a peach of a goal from Lewis Grabban. He picked the ball up just inside the visitors' half, swept forward and with everyone expecting a pass, he hit an absolutely unstoppable shot into the top corner from all of 25 yards out. Rotherham continued to make all the running and Gareth Evans had a shot brilliantly saved by Chris Neal and the Shrews goalkeeper denied Grabban a second, turning his effort for a corner off his legs. But the visitors came back with a goal after 44 minutes. Mark Wright's free-kick was headed back across goal by Jermaine Grandison and substitute Shane Cansdell-Sherriff volleyed home from 12 yards out. By comparison, the second half was very disappointing with both teams more concerned with not losing then going for a winner. Shrewsbury never produced a shot on target while at the other end Marcus Marshall curled a shot just over and when it seemed Evans must score with six minutes remaining, he completely missed his shot.
