Vale begin life without Adams
Managerless Port Vale travel to Rotherham without the guidance of Micky Adams after he agreed to take the reins at Sheffield United on Thursday afternoon.
Assistant manager Geoff Horsfield and head of youth Mark Grew will take charge of team affairs at Don Valley Stadium as the Valiants look to ensure their promotion charge does not become derailed in the process.
Talk of Adams' departure coincided with Tuesday`s 3-0 defeat at Gillingham - the club's heaviest league loss of the campaign - although members of Vale's playing squad have been quick to play down the significance.
Centre-back Gareth Owen recovered from a back injury to start at Priestfield and should do so again, he was flanked by Lee Collins at left-back after he made his first start since November in place of the unfortunate Kris Taylor having recovered from shin splints.
Anthony Griffith was recalled in midfield at the expense of Sean Rigg, but it remains to be seen how Horsfield and Grew will send their charges out after Adams' departure and the nature of Tuesday`s loss.
Reserve keeper Chris Martin will be assessed having missed out against Gills due to a virus.
Rotherham are set to take the field for just the second time since November 23.
The Millers have been hit hard by the weather with their last three fixtures being called off. But with a recent thaw, there is little doubt over the table-topping clash at Don Valley.
That enforced winter break has at least allowed on-loan defender Danny Coid extra time to recover from a hamstring injury and he should be back in contention.
Skipper Ryan Cresswell, who broke his collarbone three weeks ago, has still yet to miss a game but he will play no part for at least the next month.
The break has also given defender Dale Tonge and on-loan Arsenal midfielder Mark Randall the chance to regain full fitness but with both of them recovering from long-term injuries, neither are expected to make Ronnie Moore's side.
Millers thump Vale
Rampant Rotherham re-established their claims for an automatic promotion place with a 5-0 hammering of managerless Port Vale.
The Millers dominated from start to finish against an opposition who had been shellshocked by the midweek loss of manager Micky Adams.
Having had a goal ruled out for offside after only three minutes Rotherham followed that up with one that did count after ten minutes.
A long clearance out of defence was headed on by Ryan Taylor, and Will Atkinson touched the ball to the advancing Nicky Law who slammed a first time shot past Stuart Tomlinson.
And nine minutes later the home side doubled their lead with a copy book goal when they cleverly switched play from the left to the right for Danny Coid to cross and pick out Ryan Taylor whose powerful header flew over Tomlinson and into the back of the net.
After 31 minutes Andy Warrington made a smart save to deny Justin Richards, but two minutes later, Vale were reduced to ten men when goalkeeper Tomlinson came racing out of his area and bowled over Marcus Marshall with his challenge.
Clearly the last defender, Tomlinson was immediately shown the red card by referee Graham Salisbury and Vale were forced to sacrifice striker Justin Richards to bring on substitute goalkeeper Chris Martin.
And 38 seconds into the second half, Rotherham made it three when Will Atkinson went on a diagonal run across the Vale penalty and flicked a shot past everyone and into the net.
The fourth goal came after 69 minutes, a spectacular overhead effort from Ryan Taylor from Le Fondre's cross.
And Rotherham made it five six minutes from time when Arsenal loanee Mark Randall crashed in a magnificent 25-yard angled shot from Johnny Mullins throw in.
"Will David Moyes be able to turn it around at Ma..."
