Two excellent second-half saves from Rotherham's veteran keeper Andy Warrington ensured that both sides had to make do with a point on the season's opening day.
The former Doncaster man flew through the air to claw away a thunderous drive from Toumani Diagouraga on 56 minutes.
And the keeper did even better 11 minutes from time when Lionel Ainsworth fired in a corner which Steve Guinan headed goalwards, only to see Warrington produce an excellent reaction stop to push the ball away.
With Hereford fielding eight new arrivals and Rotherham seven, the first half had unsurprisingly little in the way of cohesive football. Much of the action was confined to midfield and neither goalkeeper was seriously tested.
Rotherham's Warrington grabbed a Trevor Benjamin cross under his own bar when Hereford forced the third of their four first-half corners.
And it was from a flag-kick that Rotherham enjoyed one of their rare moments of danger when home keeper Chris Weale was unable to hold on to Peter Holmes' cross but the Hereford defence managed to boot the ball clear.
Hereford had to thank Kris Taylor for saving their blushes when he got back superbly to tackle Andy Todd when the visitors broke out quickly from a Hereford free-kick.
The home side produced much more of a threat during the second period with the pace of Ainsworth often causing problems down the right flank.
The young winger gave full-back Paul Hurst a torrid time and from one of his many crosses Guinan might have done better when he directed the ball wide from close-range.
Rotherham's attack posed few problems for keeper Weale but Chris O'Grady might have done better when he blazed high over after cutting neatly into the Hereford area.
