Match Preview

Rolfes stays home Bayer Leverkusen coach Jupp Heynckes has opted to leave captain Simon Rolfes in Germany rather than expose him to freezing temperatures in Trondheim. Rolfes has only recently made his comeback from injury after six months on the sidelines and Heynckes does not want to risk him suffering a relapse in what are likely to be difficult conditions against Rosenborg. "We are going to have very difficult pitch conditions and will have to train on an artificial pitch and that is obviously dangerous for his operated knee," said the Leverkusen coach on his club's website. "I would rather not take any risk with him." Leverkusen need just a point to secure their place in the knockout stages of the Europa League along with fellow Bundesliga side Stuttgart, who have already secured their passage with two games to go. Leverkusen are also keen to turn the page after losing ground on Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund by conceding a penalty deep into stoppage time to only draw 2-2 with Hoffenheim on Saturday. "We must move on," said the club's director of sport Rudi Voller. "We want to get the point that takes us through." With the temperatures dropping to minus 20 in recent nights, the biggest fight on Rosenborg's hands has been ensuring the pitch will be playable. The underground heating system alone is unable to cope with such low temperatures and has created condensation on the surface, which is why a huge tarpaulin inflated by hot air has been spread across the pitch at the Lerkendal Stadion, ensuring the game will go ahead. "We have 20 degrees underneath the tarpaulin and no condensation," explained their groundsman Anders Oien on their website. "We have done half of the pitch and seen that it works so the pitch will in any case be ready for battle." Only a win can keep Rosenborg in the frame for qualification, but they would then also have to succeed against Aris Thessaloniki in their final group game and hope for a favourable result from Leverkusen's final match with Atletico Madrid. Considering Rosenborg lost 4-0 in Germany in September, they are not likely to be able to rely upon their head-to-head record with the Bundesliga side should they end the group level on points.

Match Report

Sam the man for Leverkusen Bayer Leverkusen secured a spot in the Europa League last 32 with a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Rosenborg in Trondheim. Sidney Sam scored the only goal of the game in the 35th minute for the German side. Leverkusen remained top of Group B with 11 points with one match remaining and extended their unbeaten streak in Europe to eight matches since their 4-1 loss to Zenit St Petersburg in the 2007-08 UEFA Cup quarter-finals. Rosenborg have just three points and cannot now reach the knockout stages after Aris beat Atletico Madrid in the group's other match tonight. Rosenborg missed the first two chances of the game with Morten Moldskred shooting wide after 10 minutes and Rade Prica headed just wide seven minutes later. Leverkusen were close to grabbing the lead after 24 minutes but Rosenborg keeper Daniel Orlund did a fine job stopping Nicolai Jorgensen's header from six yards out. Leverkusen striker Patrick Helmes scored three minutes later but his effort was disallowed for an offside. The visitors struck after 35 minutes with Stefan Reinartz passing to Sam, who turned towards the goal and hammered a left-foot shot from 22 yards just inside the near left post for a 1-0 lead. Just one minute after the break, Leverkusen defender Sami Hyypia cleared Steffen Iversen's header off the line after Leverkusen keeper Fabian Giefer - replacing the injured Rene Adler - was beaten by Moldskred's cross. The hosts were close just three minutes later, though Prica's shot went wide of the left-hand post. Rosenborg were just inches away with 19 minutes to play as Mikael Dorsin's free-kick went to Per Skjelbred, whose header went just left of the left post. The next chance for Rosenborg and Prica was a minute later as the Swedish striker's shot to the far left post went just wide. Leverkusen held on as Rosenborg came close again as Iversen first headed a chance wide with 10 minutes to play and Giefer then held the former Tottenham's next headed effort in the 89th minute.
