Match Preview

New boys battle for Dale debuts

Rochdale boss Keith Hill could hand debuts to several players when his side begin life in npower League One at home to Hartlepool.

Jack Redshaw, Joe Widdowson, Brian Barry-Murphy, Josh Lillis, Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro, Anthony Elding, Alan Goodall and Matty Done all arrived at Spotland during the summer.

Highly-rated defender Craig Dawson sat out Dale's final warm-up game against Bradford last weekend, adding more weight to the theory he has played his final game for the club.

Rochdale have twice turned down transfer requests from the player over the summer following a #400,000 bid from Middlesbrough.

Boro, Burnley and Ipswich are all understood to be vying for his signature, raising questions over whether he will be involved for Rochdale this weekend.

Hartlepool manager Chris Turner is hoping to have international clearance for Fabian Yantorno passed in time.

The Uruguayan has been on trial at Pools and the club are hoping he will feature at Spotland.

Turner has already tied up a short-term deal for Paul Murray and he will go straight into the squad for the clash.

Turner told the club's official website: "We're working on things behind the scenes. It's complicated with Fabian due to the required international clearance."

If Yantorno does sign he would become Pools' fourth new arrival this summer, having already brought in Hartlepool-born full-back Evan Horwood and goalkeeper Andy Rafferty.

Horwood is expected to make his debut while defender Gary Liddle is suspended.

Match Report

Stalemate at Spotland Rochdale had to settle for a point on their long-awaited return to the third tier of English football after a goalless draw with Hartlepool. Pools gave the new boys an early taste of life in League One with Joe Gamble and Andy Monkhouse both going close inside the first six minutes. As Dale began to find their feet, debutant Jean-Louis Akpa-Akpro cut in from the left and laid the ball off to Gary Jones who stung Scott Flinders' palms from 20 yards. Flinders was called into action again after 18 minutes when he denied Jones for a second time after the Rochdale skipper had got on the end of Joe Thompson's cut-back. after the break, half-time substitute Adam Boyd almost made an immediate impact, supplying the cross for Anthony Sweeney to head over from 10 yards before Josh Lillis' acrobatic save kept out Sweeney's 25-yard drive after 52 minutes. Hartlepool continued to have the better chances in the second half - Sam Collins headed over the bar from Gamble's corner 20 minutes from time - but neither side could find a telling breakthrough.
