Match Report
Bury climbed back into the top three after beating Rochdale at Gigg Lane to leapfrog their derby rivals.
Elliott Bennett gave the hosts a 19th minute lead before a superb second from Mike Jones ensured Will Buckley's injury-time effort was merely a consolation.
Derby day began with a surprise on the Bury teamsheet, with captain Paul Scott missing only his second game of the season and Steve Haslam coming in at right-back.
Scott suffered a knee injury in midweek and will undergo surgery on Monday, which could rule out the Shakers skipper for the rest of the season.
The game got off to a lively start in front of comfortably the biggest crowd of the season at Gigg Lane and Bury winger Jones tested Frank Fielding early on.
Rochdale's Buckley looked dangerous on the right wing and the youngster beat David Buchanan in the 14th minute before sweeping a low ball into the six-yard box which was palmed out by Bury keeper Mark Tyler.
Bury then took the lead following a defensive error. Dale snuffed out a Bury attack but the back pass was short, allowing Bennett to block Fielding's clearance and the ball looped into the empty net.
Dale responded well and won a couple of corners in quick succession, before Joe Thompson had a header cleared off the line by Efe Sodje following a cross by ex-Bury winger Nicky Adams, who came in for some harsh treatment from the home crowd.
Andy Morrell was inches from doubling Bury's lead moments later with a glancing header that came back off the post after neat play between Bennett and Stephen Dawson on the right.
The hosts continued to play the better football and Fielding had to be alert to claw Bennett's cross away from Andy Bishop before preventing Jones getting a shot away.
Dale started the second half strongly as they attacked the away end, although the first chance after the restart fell to Bury.
Morrell played a neat one-two with Bishop inside the box and with the goal at his mercy the veteran striker side-footed over from seven yards.
Adam Le Fondre then headed over from sub Adam Rundle's corner, while Buckley tested Tyler with a 25-yard strike as Dale piled on the pressure.
Sodje then made an important block to deny Le Fondre before Jones sealed the three points, playing a one-two with Bishop before beating Fielding from 12 yards.
Buckley forced the ball past Tyler late on but it was too late to launch a fightback.
