Match Preview

McCoist enjoying the ride at Rangers Ally McCoist insists he is loving life as Rangers manager, despite admitting his tenure has been a "bumpy ride" so far. McCoist endured a difficult start to the job when Rangers began their league campaign with a draw at home to Hearts and crashed out of both the Champions League and Europa League at the qualifying stages. But results in the SPL have improved dramatically, earning McCoist - who replaced Walter Smith at the Ibrox helm in the summer - the Clydesdale Bank Premier League manager of the month award for September. He said: "I absolutely love the day-to-day stuff but what I really enjoy are the games. "It's been a bumpy ride, it's not all been plain sailing, and it will continue to be a bumpy ride, of that I'm very confident. "But it's a job that I love and I really do enjoy it. I'm still learning the job and I don't claim to know everything, but I'm doing my best to learn and I'll continue to enjoy it." Rangers are aiming for a 10th consecutive SPL win at home to St Mirren and McCoist was asked what kind of message such a run would send out to everyone else. He said: "The message it would send out to everybody is that we've got a terrific level of consistency. I hope we do send that message out but we have to earn it. "One thing that has helped us get results, and has guaranteed us results, is a desire to work really hard for each other. That will have to be the case again tomorrow. "If we are lucky enough to get the win, it will certainly send a message that we are showing a good level of consistency. "We have shown a consistency in the league so far that we have been very pleased with and which has been very good. "At the same time, with the European thing and the League Cup, it has been balanced with that. It has been a bumpy ride, a helter-skelter ride. "There has been some very good stuff and some disappointments along the way. "In terms of the league campaign, all we can really hope for is that the lads show the same level of consistency, which they have done. "They have approached all the games in a terrific manner and I think they have got their deserved rewards. It's just more of the same really." Sasa Papac is a doubt for the clash. The left-back is suffering from a sinus problem and looks likely to miss the clash at Ibrox. Jamie Ness is out with a groin injury, while Kyle Bartley is still recovering from a hernia operation. St Mirren manager Danny Lennon has told his players they must produce the slick football that has won them plaudits this season. With points hard to come by against a team who have won nine Clydesdale Bank Premier League matches in succession, Lennon believes their performance is crucial as they look to continue making progress. The improvement and passing football that has been evident this season for Saints was missing in their last game, a 2-1 defeat to bottom club Inverness before the international break. And Lennon has demanded a return to their new style. "It's very important for us, regardless of where we are going, to play our brand," the St Mirren manager said. "It's been a long one coming for us after the disappointment of Inverness. But what an opportunity and what an arena for us on Saturday. "The big, big thing that I'm looking for overall, we must have a performance and we must do it our way." St Mirren have an unchanged squad the game. Midfielders Hugh Murray (knee) and Aaron Mooy (back) have yet to return to full training. Defender Darren McGregor (knee) is a long-term absentee.

Match Report

Thompson returns to haunt Rangers Rangers were denied a 10th consecutive win in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League after being held to a last-gasp 1-1 draw by St Mirren. The Scottish champions had looked on course to move 12 points clear of Celtic when Nikica Jelavic opened the scoring early in the second half. But Ally McCoist's men were stunned when Saints hit back deep in injury time as former Rangers striker Steven Thompson grabbed a late leveller to ensure a share of the points. Rangers made two changes from the side who defeated Hibernian before the international break for the visit of St Mirren. Sasa Papac was ruled out with a sinus problem and Alejandro Bedoya was dropped from the squad, as Lee Wallace and Steven Naismith - back from suspension - both started. Saints made one change from the side who lost to Inverness in their last outing, with Kenny McLean starting and Gary Teale dropping to the bench. Rangers started strongly and Kyle Lafferty tested Craig Samson early on with a close-range volley from a Gregg Wylde corner that the goalkeeper did well to block. Another flag-kick, this time from Steven Davis, found Maurice Edu in the packed box and the American bulleted a powerful header just past the post. Jelavic then collected from Naismith and tried to find Lafferty in the box for the header but the move was read by Samson who intercepted and gathered before the Northern Irishman could make contact. At the other end, Nigel Hasselbaink picked up the first booking of the game from referee Crawford Allan for diving after taking a tumble just outside the box under pressure from Steven Whittaker. With time fast running out to find a goal before the interval, Davis played a one-two with Wylde and surged into the box only to drill past the upright, with Samson untroubled. Rangers fans perked up thanks to Paul Gascoigne's half-time appearance, which earned him a rapturous reception, as he told Rangers fans "the best football I ever played in my life was here at Ibrox" and that he wished he could pull his boots on again and help the team out. The legendary player perhaps proved to be an inspiration to the current team who opened the scoring just three minutes after the restart when Lafferty did well to retain possession before setting up Jelavic for the shot from 12 yards. Saints tried to haul themselves back into the game and Thompson found himself through on goal before Whittaker made an impressive saving tackle to deny the visitors a quick leveller. Naismith then whipped a tempting pass to the feet of Jelavic who looked certain to claim his second of the day from just six yards out only to look on in disbelief as his shot cannoned off the legs of Samson. Rangers were keen to snuff out any hope of a late Saints comeback but Samson was up to the task again, this time to block a Davis effort from just inside the box. The visitors piled forward in the final minutes and could have hit back through Jeroen Tesselaar but goalkeeper Allan McGregor was able to block at his near post. But McGregor was unable to prevent Thompson netting an injury-time equaliser when he fired home from a David van Zanten cross to earn the Paisley side a share of the points.
