Match Preview

McCoist: Naismith must not change his game Rangers manager Ally McCoist does not believe Steven Naismith should change his overall style of play after the player was handed a retrospective two-match ban for violent conduct and will miss Tuesday's clash with Kilmarnock. Television footage apparently showed Naismith catching Austin McCann in the face with an elbow during Saturday's 4-0 Clydesdale Bank Premier League win at Dunfermline. The incident was missed by referee Iain Brines, and played down as an accident by McCann afterwards, but prompted a Notice of Complaint to be lodged with Rangers by the Scottish Football Association. After reviewing video footage, Rangers decided to accept the punishment, which sees Naismith sit out the clashes with Kilmarnock and Hibernian at the weekend. However, McCoist was keen to defend Naismith's general approach. He said: "I would not want to take anything away from Steven's game in terms of his natural zest and enthusiasm to play the game because that is one of his biggest strengths. You've got to control these emotions and talents and, in that respect, he is no different from any other individual." Meanwhile, McCoist has called on his players to continue their fine form in the SPL when Kilmarnock come calling. The Scottish champions have already exited the UEFA Champions League, the Europa League and the Scottish Communities League Cup this season and the manager insists they must now focus on remaining top of the SPL. He said: "We are delighted that the league form has been very steady and very good. It's a good start, that's all it is. "The lads know, because of the League Cup exit, that we have to train all our thoughts for the next few months on league results. "You would rather be in cup competitions but, at the same time, at least we all know we can train our thoughts in one direction. "So far, it has been very, very good and the level of consistency in the league games has been really pleasing and that must continue." On the visit of Kilmarnock, McCoist added: "I'm looking forward to the game. It's an opportunity for us to extend our lead at the top of the league. "Our form in the league has been really pleasing and we have shown a lot more consistency in our league performances than we have in anything else this season." Rangers are boosted by the return of skipper David Weir, who has been out of action with a hamstring injury since the end of July. Kilmarnock go into the encounter on the back of a 3-0 defeat at St Mirren Park, but manager Kenny Shiels is adamant there were mitigating factors for the loss that were outside their control. Killie striker Paul Heffernan had a goal disallowed for offside when the game was goalless and Zdenek Kroca, who twice hit the bar with headers, was harshly penalised for handball to allow Paul McGowan to score his second goal for Danny Lennon's team before the break. Mohamadou Sissoko then felt he was pushed by Nigel Hasselbaink before the Dutchman made it 3-0. Shiels said: "The team did enough to win the match on Saturday. "I don't want to take anything away from St Mirren because that would be unfair on them. "They weren't actually as good as I thought they had been and I'm sure Danny thinks that as well, because we got a lot of success in terms of territorial advantage and how we passed the ball. They were chasing the ball, which was good. "We got a good goal, and we have since found out there were two players playing Heffernan onside, not even one, so it wasn't even marginal. That disappoints me. "That would have put us in front and there was an illegitimate goal just before half-time, which killed our way of thinking. They were in the dressing room, angry and we have to try to get composure back in our minds. "I was disappointed we couldn't get the game back again and then the third goal was a push on our centre-back, so there was an accumulation of errors. I'm not complaining about it, that happens." Kilmarnock have named an unchanged squad. Danny Buijs (hamstring) remains on the sidelines along with long-term absentee Ryan O'Leary (knee).

Match Report

Gers extend advantage Rangers stretched their lead at the summit of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League to seven points with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Kilmarnock. Second-half goals from Nikica Jelavic and Gregg Wylde - his first at Ibrox - secured the win after the opening 45 minutes had ended goalless. The Scottish champions will now be hoping to open up a 10-point advantage over Celtic with victory over Hibernian on Saturday before their rivals are next in SPL action. Rangers were forced to head into the clash without Steven Naismith, who was yesterday handed a retrospective two-match ban for violent conduct during Saturday's win over Dunfermline. Manager Ally McCoist made just one change for the visit of Killie, with Juan Manuel Ortiz drafted into the side in place of the suspended Naismith. Kilmarnock had an early chance to open the scoring when James Fowler delivered a cross into the box for Paul Heffernan, who just failed to connect with the header in front of goal. At the other end, Jelavic set up Sasa Papac for the shot and though he only had Cammy Bell to beat, the Killie goalkeeper was up to the task and did well to block the point-blank effort. Jelavic had a decent chance of his own when the ball broke unexpectedly for him just inside the area but the Croatian striker connected awkwardly and the shot fell well wide of the upright. Bell then bravely turned an Ortiz ball past the near post, with Jelavic loitering with intent in the goalmouth as the home side continued to press for the opener. With half-time approaching, Maurice Edu tried his luck from distance but he was denied a repeat of his impressive strike at the weekend and watched as his effort dipped well over the crossbar on this occasion. Gary Fisher picked up the first booking of the game shortly after the restart for a foul on Kyle Lafferty but Rangers failed to capitalise on the resultant free-kick, with Steven Davis' effort blocked by the wall and landing wide. Fisher was followed into referee Willie Collum's book by Dean Shiels, for a foul on Wylde, before Bell threw himself in front of a Lafferty shot after the Northern Irishman was set up by Steven Whittaker for the best chance so far. Fowler also earned himself a caution for felling Wylde and the foul proved costly when Jelavic met the free-kick from Davis and sidefooted home to open the scoring after 64 minutes. Gary Harkins hit the crossbar for Kilmarnock but Rangers doubled their lead with 66 minutes gone when Wylde played a one-two with Edu before rifling into the back of the gaping net from six yards. Rangers should have had the net bulging again when Jelavic turned provider for Davis but Bell just managed to palm the effort to safety and deny the midfielder the opportunity to add his name to the scoresheet. Davis then returned the favour with a cross for Jelavic, who shrugged off Zdenek Kroca, only to blast over and fail to trouble Bell this time. But, after a sluggish start to the match and clearly missing the influence of Naismith, Rangers were able to hold on for what was a comfortable win in the end.
