Match Preview

Otman won`t Bakk against PSV PSV Eindhoven midfielder Otman Bakkal has promised that the team will do their utmost to progress to the Europa League semi-finals, but admits they face an uphill battle against Benfica. PSV succumbed to a comprehensive 4-1 quarter-final, first-leg defeat in Lisbon last week, courtesy of Eduardo Salvio's brace and efforts from Pablo Aimar and Javier Saviola. Zakaria Labyad grabbed a consolation and potentially important away goal at the Estadio de Luz, but Bakkal is realistic about his side's chances of progression. "We know we'll face an uphill battle but we'll give it our best shot," he said. "We play in our stadium in front of 30,000 PSV fans and intend to put in a fine display. "I must admit it will be hard to bounce back from defeat to Benfica in the first leg. "Players of the PSV team that won the European Cup in 1988 will be at the game, which is certainly an incentive to perform well. "We haven't done badly this season so far, we've reached the Europa League quarter-finals and we're still in the title race." The Holland international's sentiments were echoed by manager Fred Rutten, who has several key players missing for the encounter. "We have some injury and suspension concerns," he said. "Orlando Engelaar and Erik Pieters are ruled out through suspension and Wilfred Bouma is not 100% fit. "He'll face a late fitness test before a decision is made. "I've said beforehand we need a fully-fit squad to get a good result. "But in Lisbon we conceded two clumsy goals, on the stroke of half-time and deep into injury time. "We'll try and score an early goal. It would give us a confidence boost against a very tough side to beat." Benfica are expected to field their strongest possible side as the they look to book their first European semi-final place in 17 years. Manager Jorge Jesus has no suspension issues to contend with and is likely to field the same starting XI which began the first leg in Lisbon.

Match Report

Benfica overcome worry to progress Benfica survived a first-half scare to reach the semi-finals of the Europa League, drawing 2-2 with PSV Eindhoven to secure a 6-3 aggregate success. The away side fell 2-0 behind after goals from Balazs Dzsudzsak and Jeremain Lens in the opening 25 minutes in Holland, but a volley from defender Anderson Luisao and a second-half Oscar Cardozo penalty secured Benfica's passage into an all-Portuguese semi-final against Braga. Benfica were the quickest out of the traps and an improvised volley from Nicolas Gaitan almost gave the visitors an early breakthrough. Javier Saviola was then gifted a great chance to break the deadlock after 10 minutes when PSV defender Antonio Marcelo played a ball across the defence straight into the path of the Argentinian but PSV goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson made a good save. Despite requiring three goals to progress, the home side had been dominated in the opening exchanges but they started to impose themselves on the game and took their first real chance on 17 minutes. Lens beat the Benfica offside trap and his pace allowed him to escape any challenges before he delivered a low cross which was converted by Dzsudzsak at the back post. Lens again used his blistering pace to beat the visitors' defence on 25 minutes and when his first effort was well saved by Jimenez Roberto, the forward showed great composure to convert the rebound. Dzsudzsak then had a great chance to put PSV in charge of the tie as he gathered possession on the edge of the box after a mistake from Maxi Pereira, but Roberto made himself big and blocked the shot. The home side were starting to dominate and their defence were repelling anything that Benfica could throw at them, with only a long-range chip from Cardozo coming close. But deep into first-half stoppage time Pereira swung in a free-kick which Isaksson flapped, at allowing Luisao to score an acrobatic volley and give Benfica a vital away goal. The second half started slowly, with the first real chances of note coming just before the hour mark when Gaitan stung the palms of Isaksson and Luisao headed the resulting corner just over the bar. Benfica's equaliser on the night came in the 62nd minute after Cesar Peixoto was crudely fouled in the box by Marcelo, who was lucky to remain on the pitch having already been booked, and Cardozo coolly slotted the penalty straight down the middle of the goal to put the tie beyond PSV.
