Match Preview

Portsmouth face Wigan Athletic on Saturday afternoon in a game they will be looking to win to stay in touch with those ahead of them at the foot of the table.

Paul Hart's men are beleaguered to say the least and he has a job on his hands to keep them in the league this term.

After losing the likes of Jermain Defoe, Glen Johnson, Niko Kranjcar and Sylvain Distin in recent times, Pompey have not replaced such classy talent and this is one of the main reasons why they find themselves in such a predicament so early in the season.

They sit rock-bottom of the table and are already five points away from safety. Worryingly, they have lost all five games at home to date.

Experienced first-teamers such as David James, Papa Bouba Diop and John Utaka need to pull the south coast based club out of the fire this weekend and they should be confident of grabbing a much needed success this time round.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez will want to add more misery to the strugglers as he continues to stamp his mark on his new team.

Hugo Rodallega, with three goals in his last four games, is starting to shine for the Latics and he will be the visitors' obvious goal threat.

The Spaniard joined from Swansea City in the summer and he has an almost full squad to choose from, only recent injury victim Maynor Figueroa, with a knee ligament injury, is missing.

Hart has to pick his team without Linvoy Primus (ankle) and fellow veteran defender Hermann Hreidarsson, who is also struggling with an ankle complaint.

The corresponding fixture last season saw Wigan return north with three points following a 2-1 success.

Controversial Egyptian striker Amr Zaki scored from the penalty just before the interval but Niko Kranjcar restored parity in the 82nd minute.

Match Report

Misfiring striker Aruna Dindane bagged a hat-trick as bottom club Portsmouth thrashed Wigan Athletic 4-0 at Fratton Park to ease the pressure on manager Paul Hart.

Dindane and strike partner Frederic Piquionne both scored their first Premier League goals to earn rejuvenated Pompey their first home win of the season.

It is the first time this season any Portsmouth frontman has netted in the league.

Portsmouth should have taken the lead in the 26th minute when Dindane headed Kevin Prince Boateng's header over the crossbar after colliding with Piquionne.

Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland found Piquionne's 29th minute piledriver too hot to handle, but reacted well to gather the rebound before Jamie O'Hara could pounce.

Dindane made amends for his earlier miss with a well-taken opener ten minutes before half-time.

Algerian midfielder Hassan Yebda sliced the Wigan defence in two with a slotted through ball and Dindane neatly lifted the ball over the onrushing Kirkland and into the bottom left corner.

Portsmouth doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time as Piquionne burst into the penalty area down the right and placed an angled shot into the opposite corner.

Dindane put the match out of hopeless Wigan's reach early in the second half, sliding in to finish from close range, after substitute Kanu and O'Hara had combined down the right.

Ivory Coast international Dindane completed the rout from the penalty spot in the final minute.

Kanu was tripped by Emmerson Boyce and Dindane stepped up to hammer the resulting sot-kick into the roof of Kirkland's net.

The only sour note for Pompey was Piquionne being stretchered off midway through the second half after landing awkwardly on his knee.

Wigan, who also saw in-form Hugo Rodallega hobble off after falling over advertising boards, did not muster a single shot on target.

Midfielder Hendry Thomas's header high over David James' crossbar was the closest Roberto Martinez's side came to getting on the scoresheet.
