Match Report

Two of the leading English managers cross swords at St James' Park on Saturday when Sam Allardyce's Newcastle United side entertain Harry Redknapp's in-form Portsmouth.

United have been excellent at home so far this season, taking 13 points from a possible 15, but have been woeful on their travels winning only one point from their last four away matches since beating Bolton Wanderers at the Reebok Stadium on the opening weekend of the campaign.

Their inconsistency was highlighted last week when they strolled past Tottenham on Tyneside before producing an insipid display in the 2-1 defeat at Reading.

Saturday's game would appear to have come too soon for Mark Viduka, who has not yet recovered from the calf injury he sustained in the 3-1 defeat at Manchester City, so Allardyce looks set to persevere with a strike partnership of Michael Owen and Oba Martins.

Allardyce has admitted that he still does not know his best team, but he will once again be without long-term injury victims Peter Ramage, Stephen Carr and Damien Duff.

Pompey boss Redknapp has been rewarded for his sterling work since returning to Fratton Park from Southampton by penning a new contract this week.

The south coast side travel to the north-east on the back of a six-match unbeaten run in the league, and apart from the amazing 7-4 win against Reading at the end of September, they have kept five clean sheets in that sequence.

They have been particularly impressive on their travels, winning their last three away matches without conceding a goal.

Included in that run was a 1-0 victory at Blackburn - Rovers' only league defeat so far this term - before three-points haul from visits to Fulham and Wigan Athletic.

In the corresponding fixture last season, Newcastle won 1-0 thanks to Antoine Sibierski's second-half goal.
