Match Preview

Mokoena pushing to start Portsmouth boss Steve Cotterill has no new injury or suspension problems ahead of the home clash against Middlesbrough. Cotterill will have the same squad at his disposal as he did for the 2-1 midweek defeat at Bristol City, a result which ended a run of six consecutive wins and a club record of 636 minutes without conceding a goal. The Pompey boss could revert from the 4-5-1 formation used in midweek to 4-4-2, with David Nugent moving forward to support Dave Kitson in attack and Joel Ward taking up a wide right position. South African midfielder Aaron Mokoena could also be recalled after some impressive substitute performances in recent weeks. Attacker Danny Webber has stepped up his recovery from a year on the sidelines with anterior cruciate ligament damage but is nowhere near ready to return to action. Middlesbrough defender Joe Bennett will wear a protective lightweight cast. The 20-year-old full-back chipped a bone in his wrist during Tuesday night's vital 2-1 npower Championship victory over Derby but will have the lightweight cast checked by match officials before the game and will play if the dressing is, as expected, approved. Bennett will be joined in the squad by experienced central defender Stephen McManus on his return from ankle ligament damage. The 28-year-old Scotland international has not played since the beginning of November and will not be considered for a start but could make it on to the bench. There is otherwise little good news for manager Tony Mowbray on the injury front with Julio Arca set to miss out once again with knee and toe problems. Loan keeper Paul Smith, who made his debut against the Rams, will continue in goal with Jason Steele (torn stomach muscle) and Danny Coyne (back) still out, along with Andrew Davies, Matthew Bates and Justin Hoyte (all hamstring), Jonathan Franks and Luke Williams (both ankle), Willo Flood (thigh) and Kevin Thomson (hairline leg fracture).

Match Report

Boro claim battling point Middlesbrough picked up a useful point at Portsmouth in the npower Championship following a goalless draw as they continued their battle against the drop. Tony Mowbray's side went into the clash at Fratton Park on the back of a confidence-boosting win at Derby and backed that up with a thoroughly-deserved point. Portsmouth were left frustrated as they wasted a string of chances to beat goalkeeper Paul Smith. Despite surrendering a six-match winning run against Bristol City on Tuesday, Portsmouth named an unchanged side as they looked to get back on track. Middlesbrough also kept faith with their starting XI from midweek, but it was Pompey who started the better of the pair and dominated the early exchanges. David Nugent fashioned the first chance, but his header could only find the hands of Smith. It was a warning of things to come for Boro as Portsmouth kept the pressure on. Joel Ward could have tested Smith but his headed effort lacked the power and direction to cause any alarm. They did come within a whisker after 20 minutes, though, as another header from Hermann Hreidarsson rattled the bar as he latched onto David Cotterill's free-kick. Dave Kitson was next to try his luck but brave defending from Rhys Williams' ensured his goal remained in tact. And after half an hour Mowbray's men made their first foray forward as Jamie Ashdown parried Barry Robson's shot to safety. That gave the away side an injection of much-needed belief and they worked Ashdown again as Nicky Bailey had a driven shot turned wide. Middlesbrough began the second period stronger and Scott McDonald forced another save from Ashdown. Pompey's influence on the game was waning and it was Middlesbrough looking more likely to take home another vital three points. Steve Cotterill threw on Liam Lawrence and Kanu in search of a breakthrough but they lacked the fluency that had helped them to mount a surge up the table. Lawrence found room from 20 yards to test Smith but the shot proved to be little more than handling practice. Smith did do well to keep Pompey at bay as the game reached its final stages, punching away a Nugent header as it threatened to find a way through a crowded area. But Marvin Emnes - on for the injured Leroy Lita - nearly snatched victory for the visitors as his drive from the left side of penalty area brought another crucial save from Ashdown.
