Match Preview

Taylor struggling for Cobblers clash Rob Taylor is a doubt for Port Vale ahead of the home game against Northampton on Friday night. A virus swept through the Vale camp prior to the trip to Gillingham. Defender Rob Kozluk missed the draw at Priestfield last weekend because of the sickness bug. Although he has now recovered, winger Taylor took a turn for the worse this week. "Rob (Taylor) was poorly at half-time at Gillingham but played on. Maybe it would have been better to take him off then, but hindsight is a lovely thing," said Vale assistant manager Mark Grew. "He is suffering from sickness and diarrhoea. As we are playing on Friday, we have kept him away as we don't want him to bring the bug to the ground. "He had a rough weekend and, even if he comes back, we have to be mindful that a virus can take a lot out of your body. So we will have to monitor him." Meanwhile, midfielder Ryan Burge`s absence has been prolonged by upto another 10 days as he suffers from inflammation in a knee. A goal against the Cobblers would stretch Vale`s scoring run to 15 consecutive games, breaking a club record that has stood since 1958. Northampton will be without top scorer Adebayo Akinfenwa after he suffered a fractured jaw during the home defeat to Crawley last weekend. The injury is not as bad as the club initially feared but the striker is expected to be out for around two weeks. Nick McKoy is available after serving a four-match suspension and the midfielder could be asked to do a job up front in Akinfenwa`s absence. McKoy played for the reserves this week in a behind-closed-doors friendly against a strong Coventry side. Captain John Johnson sustained a knock against Crawley but the defender has recovered and will play against Vale. However, midfielder Arron Davies (back and hamstring) remains a doubt.

Match Report

Vale ease to victory A dominant first half saw Port Vale cruise to a 3-0 victory over Northampton in npower League Two. The hosts scored three goals inside the opening 26 minutes as they recorded a first triumph over the Cobblers in seven meetings. Vale were bidding to set a new club record of scoring in the first 16 games of a season and woeful defending enabled them to do so as early as the fifth minute. The Northampton rearguard stood like statues as Doug Loft's corner bounced into the path of Tom Pope who headed in unchallenged from four yards. Anthony Griffith rifled in the second with a 35-yard shot in the 20th minute which went in despite Sam Walker getting a hand to it. And a rout was on the cards when the persistent Pope headed forward to set up big defender John McCombe to prod in Vale's third from close range six minutes later. Northampton stemmed the tide for the rest of the first half, but their dismal night was summed up three minutes after the interval when Lewis Young fired over a gaping net. Cobblers centre-back Kelvin Langmead went closest to a consolation goal when he struck a post eight minutes from time, but Vale coasted to a victory which lifted them to fifth place in the table.
