Match Preview

Problems mount for Vale Port Vale's injury problems have worsened ahead of the visit of Gillingham. Adam Yates faces up to two months out with a knee injury after scans revealed the defender suffered ligament damage during the draw at Bradford in midweek. Tom Pope has been nursing a groin problem recently but he has finally succumbed and the striker will undergo surgery on Friday that will rule him out for around a month. With Yates sidelined and the versatile Lee Collins (ankle) still not fit, manager Micky Adams may be forced to play Anthony Griffith at the back. "Anthony played there when I first came to the club. While we don't want to lose his energy in midfield, we might have to put him back there," said Adams. Rob Taylor is making slow progress in his recovery from an Achilles injury and is a major doubt for Saturday, while fellow midfielders Ryan Burge (knee) and Lewis Haldane (broken leg) remain out. Captain Andy Frampton will play no part for Gillingham having been ruled out for up to six weeks. The centre-back was forced off nursing an ankle injury in the second half of Monday's 2-1 home defeat to Southend and has now been sidelined for the foreseeable future. Either fit-again Simon King or youngster Connor Essam are likely to step in. Manager Andy Hessenthaler has promised to freshen up his his side this weekend after Monday's reverse consigned the Kent club to a fifth straight defeat. Midfielder Jack Payne and right-back Jack Evans were introduced from the bench at half-time against the Shrimpers and performed admirably, putting themselves in the frame to start. Goalkeeper Ross Flitney (knee) continues to miss out along with defenders Charlie Lee (knee) and Matt Fish (ankle).

Match Report

Richards on the spot for Vale Port Vale striker Marc Richards scored a 90th-minute penalty to secure a 2-1 victory over Gillingham. Richards, who was pushed to the ground by Chris Whelpdale, fired his spot-kick low to Paul Gazzaniga's left as the visiting keeper dived to his right. Vale just about edged a scrappy first-half but it was the visitors who took the lead, with Whelpdale breaking the deadlock in stoppage time. Gavin Tomlin whipped over a cross from the right and Whelpdale directed a well-placed header inside Stuart Tomlinson's right-hand post from eight yards. Vale offered little at the start of the second period and manager Micky Adams made a triple substitution just before the hour, with Gareth Owen and newcomers Paul Marshall and Chris Shuker replacing Clayton McDonald, Sam Morsy and Ben Williamson. And Marshall almost conjured a 64th-minute equaliser when his free-kick was clawed past the far post by Gillingham stopper Paul Gazzaniga. Doug Loft also tested Gazzaniga before Connor Essam flung himself to block Sean Rigg's shot as Vale finally began to up the ante. Danny Kedwell squandered a great chance to increase the visitors' advantage on the break before Vale drew level nine minutes from time. Loft crossed from the right and Rigg rose majestically to bury a perfectly placed header high inside Gazzaniga's right-hand post ahead of Richards' late winner.
