Match Preview
Adams set to ring the changes Boss Micky Adams has promised to make changes for Port Vale`s home clash against Gillingham having accused his side of failing to cope with the pressure of being top of the table. Adams watched on at Edgar Street last weekend as Vale had to come from behind to draw 1-1 with bottom-side Hereford, who played for over an hour with only 10 men, leaving the Burslem outfit winless in two league games along with their exit from the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy. Captain Tommy Fraser, Chris Martin, Kris Taylor, Ritchie Sutton, Doug Loft and Rob Taylor all featured for the reserves in midweek and one or two could well have played their way into Adams` thoughts. On-loan winger Jemal Johnson has overcome the ankle and calf injuries which forced him off against the Bulls last Saturday on his full league debut for the club. Lewis Haldane continues his lengthy recovery programme and, having not featured for the second string on Tuesday night, is not ready for any involvement yet. Gillingham will be without strikers Cody McDonald and Adebayo Akinfenwa. The former has sustained a grade-one calf strain, while the latter is struggling with a groin complaint, leaving manager Andy Hessenthaler with a selection headache. Mark McCammon and Stefan Payne impressed in the reserves' 3-1 victory over Wigan on Wednesday and could deputise, but Andy Barcham remains sidelined. Dennis Oli is on the verge of returning to full fitness, although the clash with Vale could come too soon for him and Danny Jackman may miss out after picking up an ankle knock. The Gills have endured a disappointing start to the campaign, but will be hoping to get back on track with three points at Vale Park.

Match Report
Vale held by Gills Stuttering Port Vale conceded top spot to Chesterfield after a lacklustre display in a goalless draw with a Gillingham side who almost claimed their first away win in 33 games. Vale's first-half performance was a pale shadow of what they produced early in the season and the visitors were unfortunate not to be ahead at the break. Dennis Oli fired over when well placed and only a terrific piece of defending by Gareth Owen prevented Chris Palmer from opening the scoring in the 36th minute. Gillingham goalkeeper Alan Julian did not get his shorts dirty in the opening 45 minutes and there was little change after the break as the visitors remained on the front foot. Vale striker Justin Richards cleared a header from Tony Sinclair off the line before Mark Bentley was denied by the woodwork in the 69th minute. Bentley cut inside Lee Collins on the right flank and curled a 20-yard shot which bounced back off the far post with Stuart Tomlinson beaten. Vale finally forced Julian into action two minutes later when he saved from substitute Jemal Johnson and spread himself to block the follow-up shot from Marc Richards.
