Match Preview

Tactical decision awaits Adams Port Vale boss Micky Adams is faced with a tactical dilemma ahead of the derby clash at home to Crewe. In a bid to rectify successive forgettable draws against Hereford and Gillingham, Adams got rid of his 4-4-2 formation in favour of a more attacking 3-5-2 wing-back system for last weekend`s trip to Cheltenham. And although the Whaddon Road clash finished goalless, the switch encouraged a far better performance from his charges as they look to kickstart their season having dropped off top spot in League Two. Adams has failed to add an on-loan attacking midfielder to his ranks ahead of the visit of Vale`s local rivals and will go into the encounter with the same squad as he did last Saturday. Sean Rigg has recovered from a slight hamstring niggle to boost his attacking options from midfield, but Rob Taylor (hamstring) remains sidelined until December while fellow winger Lewis Haldane (ankle) is still weeks away from his first-team return. Crewe face a defensive reshuffle after Danny Blanchett was ruled out of the derby clash. The left-back was kept in hospital as a precautionary measure after suffering concussion from a clash of heads with Aldershot's Jermaine McGlashan during the 3-1 win last weekend. Blanchett was initially given the all-clear after receiving stitches to a wound near his eye but club physios have advised him not to play. Mat Mitchel-King, who replaced Blanchett against the Shots, is set to be drafted in on the right-hand side of the defence with Matt Tootle switching to the left. Crewe, unbeaten in 11 league games, could potentially come up against a quartet of former players at Vale Park in the shape of Gary Roberts, Stuart Tomlinson, Adam Yates and Ritchie Sutton.

Match Report

Vale end Railwaymen run Port Vale won a pulsating local derby 2-1 with 10 men to register their first victory in five games and inflict Crewe's first defeat in 12 matches. Micky Adams' team made the stronger start and took a 13th-minute lead when Crewe allowed Doug Loft too much room to cross from the left. Loft measured his delivery to perfection and Louis Dodds timed his run to bury an unstoppable header past Rhys Taylor from eight yards. Vale denied Crewe the space to put their passing game together, but the visitors almost levelled in the 33rd minute when Stuart Tomlinson made a tremendous save from Ashley Westwood. A terrific game swung from end to end in the second-half until Marc Richards put Vale two up from a 74th minute penalty after Patrick Ada fouled Gary Roberts. But Clayton Donaldson pulled one back from a penalty eight minutes from time after Anthony Griffith received a second yellow card and was sent off for handball. Crewe poured forward in search of an equaliser during four minutes of stoppage time, but Vale held firm to put their faltering promotion challenge back on track.
