Match Preview

Richards return for Vale Marc Richards could make his return to the Port Vale squad against Accrington. The striker has not played since sustaining an ankle problem against Crawley on the opening day of the season. However, Richards may have to settle for a place on the bench if he is fit after his replacement Sean Rigg scored twice in the victory at Barnet last weekend to open his account for the campaign. Assistant manager Mark Grew has urged Vale's fringe players to be patient as they wait for a first-team chance. The Valiants have embarked on a three-match unbeaten run, which has prompted boss Micky Adams to largely keep faith with the same starting line-up. It has left midfielders Rob Taylor, Lewis Haldane, Louis Dodds, Ryan Burge and Sam Morsy awaiting their first league starts, but Grew insists the squad will be utilised. "Everybody is in contention but everybody is going to have to be patient," Grew told the Sentinel. "We had such a good start to last season that the team picked itself. But after we started losing and things changed, people were given their opportunities." Accrington boss John Coleman will assess the fitness of Kurtis Guthrie ahead of the trip. The striker sustained a hamstring injury during Tuesday's 1-0 home win over Bradford and was replaced at half-time by Craig Lindfield, who could now earn a starting role. Defender Nat Taylor has a dead leg but is hopeful of recovering in time to feature at Vale Park but Danny Coid is still troubled by groin and back problems. The summer signing was on the bench on Tuesday but is still not fully fit, while Leam Richardson is carrying a calf strain and is unlikely to feature. The victory over the Bantams was Stanley's first win of the season and Coleman said: "It's always a relief to get the first win and now we can build on that."

Match Report

Rigg runs riot for Vale Sean Rigg scored twice and made another goal as Port Vale maintained their unbeaten start in League Two with a 4-1 victory over Accrington. Rigg opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a crisp right-foot finish from 14 yards after a clever pass from Gary Roberts. He was then fouled by Luke Joyce just outside the penalty area to enable Roberts to drive home an unstoppable free-kick five minutes later. The floodgates were open and Tom Pope made no mistake with a far-post header in the 37th minute after Adam Yates hung up an excellent cross from the right byline. It was all over two minutes before the interval with Pope this time turning provider for Rigg to poach his fourth goal of the season with a deflected shot from six yards out. Louis Moult, making his Accrington debut on loan from Vale's neighbours Stoke, blazed over a decent chance as the visitors attempted to get back into the game at the start of the second-half. To their credit, Stanley kept plugging away and full-back Peter Murphy struck the crossbar before roaming forward again to net a consolation goal 10 minutes from time. Substitute Craig Lindfield bent over a left-wing corner which Murphy bundled over the line at the far post.
