Match Preview

Saints pair face late checks Joe Mason is pushing for a recall as Plymouth bid to take their relegation fight to the final day of the season by beating automatic promotion hopefuls Southampton. Argyle must win to keep their hopes of survival alive and any other result will mean they drop down to League Two. Striker Mason has been nursing an ankle injury in recent weeks but came on as a substitute in the second half of the derby defeat at Exeter on Saturday and is in the frame to start. Midfielders Carl Fletcher, Kari Arnason and Simon Walton are all ready to play a second game in three days despite minor knocks of their own. However, midfielder Chris Clark (knee) will be sidelined again. Striker Rory Patterson returned to the squad at Exeter after serving a one-game ban and is another option for manager Peter Reid. Southampton will check on defender Dan Harding and midfielder Guly Do Prado. Both players were taken off as precautionary measures during the 3-0 victory at Brentford on Saturday. "Guly came off and was feeling his leg. It was a little bit tight," manager Nigel Adkins told the club`s official website. "Dan got a whack on his hip so we took him off too." Adkins could make changes for a second game in the space of three days, with Danny Butterfield, Ryan Dickson and Jonathan Forte available for recalls. Victory would effectively secure automatic promotion for Saints as they would go into the final game of the season three points ahead of third-placed Huddersfield with a far superior goal difference.

Match Report

Saints relegate Pilgrims Southampton all but secured promotion to the Championship after confirming Plymouth's relegation with a 3-1 win. Nigel Adkins' side are now three points clear of third-placed Huddersfield with a far superior goal difference than the Terriers with one match remaining. Southampton's top scorer Rickie Lambert took his league tally to 21 goals with two strikes as Argyle's south coast rivals tore into Peter Reid's injury ravaged Pilgrims. Saints took the lead in the 45th minute when Danny Butterfield's deep cross from the right wing was headed home at the far post by Lambert. The Saints doubled their advantage in the 49th minute when former Argyle defender Ryan Dickson sidefooted in off the post. Dickson converted a cross by Adam Lallana just seconds after a goalmouth scramble when Radhi Jaidi met a corner with a powerful header that came back off the upright. Lambert doubled his tally with a coolly executed 59th-minute penalty after being floored on his way to goal by teenage Argyle defender Curtis Nelson. Saints striker David Connolly crashed a 30 yard strike off the underside of the bar in the 85th minute. In stoppage time Yannick Bolasie sidefooted home Argyle's consolation goal from 15 yards.
