Match Report

Leroy Lita showed his Premiership class to fire ten-man Charlton Athletic to victory at Home Park and re-ignite his side's play-off hopes.

For Plymouth Argyle, the season appears to be effectively over, and this despite fate appearing to try and give them as much help as possible.

Charlton were reduced to ten men after just three minutes. Goalkeeper Nicky Weaver found himself caught underneath the ball as the wind swirled around Home Park and, after handling outside his box, was shown a red card.

Former Academy keeper Rob Elliot had to enter the fray, making his first Championship appearance after loan spells at Doncaster and Accrington.

Paul Wotton was the first player to test the young custodian with a stinging drive from 30 yards. However, this was to be Elliot's only test for the rest of the first half as Argyle struggled to stretch a compact ten-man outfit.

In fact Charlton were extremely professional and diligent in their work, although they slowed play down at every opportunity which did not sit well with the home supporters and players.

Argyle took the lead on the hour through Jermaine Easter. Gary Sawyer crossed from the left and Gary Teale nodded the ball back across goal for Easter to pounce and fire home.

Lita then stepped up to show just why his manager had brought him into the club and persevered despite an uninspiring start to his Charlton career.

Firstly he drew his side level after a rare mistake by Argyle keeper Luke McCormick. The keeper missed a lofted ball into the box, and Zhi Zheng headed down for Lita to strike.

Then, after Argyle boss Paul Sturrock had sent on substitutes Steve MacLean and Jamie Mackie as he looked to chase all three points, disaster struck the home side.

Lita was the first to react when McCormick spilled Chris Iwelumo's header and he bagged his second goal of the match to claim all three points for his side.

Mackie almost rescued a point for the Pilgrims, but young Charlton keeper Elliot got down to his left to push the shot away and cement a hard-fought victory for his side.
