Match Preview

Jones and McCann added to Posh squad Peterborough will have goalkeeper Paul Jones in the squad for the visit of Sheffield Wednesday. Jones joined on loan from Exeter on transfer deadline day but has been added as competition for - and not as a replacement for - Joe Lewis. Captain Grant McCann is back from a ban and should return to midfield as Posh look to bounce back from the defeat at Colchester on Friday night. Defender Gabriel Zakuani is still three weeks away from a return after dislocating his shoulder but Lee Frecklington is back. The midfielder returned as a last-minute substitute on Friday night after months out with an ankle injury and he is in contention to feature. Wednesday manager Alan Irvine could include new loan signing Isaiah Osbourne in his starting line-up. Midfielder Osbourne, signed on Sunday from Aston Villa until the end of the season, became Irvine's fifth capture of the January transfer window. Striker Gary Madine is back in contention after being ineligible for the weekend's FA Cup tie, leaving Irvine with four strikers to choose from after Clinton Morrison partnered Paul Heffernan up front against Hereford, with Neil Mellor starting on the substitutes' bench. Morrison boosted his chances of retaining his place in the starting line-up by converting two penalties. The Owls are still without midfielder Tommy Miller and versatile defender Lewis Buxton (both hamstring), defender Jon Otsemobor (calf) and teenage midfielder Liam Palmer (ankle).

Match Report

Irvine feeling the heat The pressure mounted on Sheffield Wednesday boss Alan Irvine as his 10-man side crashed to a 5-3 defeat to Peterborough in a London Road thriller. The vultures are circling after the Owls' winless League One run was extended to six matches. The turning point was the second-half dismissal of Darren Potter when they led 3-2 before being brushed aside. Wednesday needed only five minutes to go in front when Jermaine Johnson waltzed inside from the left flank before firing into the far corner, but Posh hauled themselves level 11 minutes later as top-scorer Craig Mackail-Smith snapped up a rebound after a Lee Tomlin blockbuster had been parried. Parity was short-lived as Gary Madine pounced for his second goal in three Wednesday appearances in the 21st minute but again the hosts quickly hit back as skipper George Boyd drilled a 20-yard drive through the legs of Nicky Weaver. Chris Sedgwick put Wednesday back on top after swapping passes with Neil Mellor 10 minutes before the break - and that was the way it stayed until Potter saw red 20 minutes from time for hacking down Mackail-Smith. Posh wasted little time in levelling as Boyd bulldozed his way through before rifling past Weaver from close range. And the hosts hit the decisive blow with six minutes to go as substitute Nathaniel Mendez-Laing weaved his way through the Wednesday defence to convert a brilliant Tomlin pass at the second attempt. And Posh added salt into Wednesday wounds as Mackail-Smith tucked away a stoppage-time fifth into an empty net after Owls keeper Weaver had gone up for a corner at the other end.
