Match Preview

Pair banned for U`s Oxford will be without suspended defensive duo Mark Creighton and Jake Wright for the home game with Torquay. The pair were sent-off in Saturday's 5-0 loss at Bradford, with Creighton serving a one-match ban after being dismissed for two bookable offences, while Wright will sit out three matches after being shown a straight red card for an angry reaction to an elbow thrown by Bantams striker James Hanson. As a result United boss Chris Wilder will be forced to thrust young defensive duo Harry Worley and Leigh Franks into the starting line-up. Worley has featured regularly for the Us this season, making 14 league appearances while Franks, 19, has played four times since joining on a six-month loan deal from Huddersfield in July. However, Wilder will not have to find a replacement for Josh Payne. The midfielder was forced to come off at half-time at the weekend after turning his ankle but there is no ligament damage and he will be able to take his place in the middle of the park. United have looked at home in their first season back in League Two following their promotion from the Blue Square Premier currently sitting in mid-table but they now face their toughest challenge so far this campaign bouncing back from a heavy defeat. Torquay will have skipper Lee Mansell back for the trip. Mansell was forced to sit out Saturday's 3-1 home win over Morecambe, the Gulls' first league victory in 10 games, due to the sending-off he received the previous week against Gillingham. Transfer-listed midfielder Nicky Wroe made a surprise return to the starting XI at the weekend and after putting in an impressive display should retain his place. Right-back Chris Robertson was ruled out of the game against the Shrimps through illness and remains a doubt, but Danny Senda, returning from a thigh injury, picked up a hamstring problem and looks likely to miss the game. If Robertson and Senda fail to recover in time, QPR loanee Joe Oastler will switch from his favoured midfield role to fill the right-sided defensive position.

Match Report

Gulls shake off Macklin red to win Billy Kee's late strike followed up Damian Batt's own goal as Torquay secured a 1-0 victory despite playing with 10 men for 73 minutes. Lloyd Macklin was sent off in the 17th minute for flicking a kick out at Anthony Tonkin and, although Oxford right-back Batt had headed into his own net from Kevin Nicholson's free-kick 12 minutes earlier, the Gulls were facing an uphill battle. James Constable missed a golden opportunity to level when he went through on goal, from Sam Deering's threaded pass, but blazed over. The visitors nearly doubled their advantage just before half-time, but two brilliant saves from Us stopper Ryan Clarke denied Kee. But the Devon side kept finding huge gaps on the counter-attack, and substitute Kee sealed it a minute from time with a low shot from 15 yards. It was a second straight defeat for Oxford, who were hammered 5-0 at Bradford at the weekend, and they are finding their honeymoon now well and truly over after winning promotion through the play-offs.
