Match Preview

Constable set for United start Oxford manager Chris Wilder looks set to restore striker James Constable to the starting line-up for the home match against Port Vale. Constable has scored seven times already this season but missed Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Cheltenham through suspension. The return of Constable compensates for the loss of defender Mark Creighton who fractured his toe in midweek and has been ruled for two weeks. Defender Anthony Tonkin could return after illness ruled him out against the Robins, but Jake Wright (back), Damien Batt (ankle) and Rhys Day (knee) are still sidelined. United will be looking to get back to winning ways after going three games without a victory but it will be tough against npower League Two table toppers Vale. Vale will likely field the same starting XI as the one which saw off fellow high-flyers Shrewsbury in midweek. Manager Micky Adams named the same side which saw off Accrington four days earlier for the top-of-the-table clash against their local rivals and he is unlikely to see any need for change at the Kassam Stadium. The only factor which may come into play is tiredness after a hectic schedule of late and Adams will assess the state of his squad. Louis Dodds has been on the periphery of late, despite contributing with some impressive displays, and he could start should Adams opt to mix it up. Boasting a club-record five successive clean sheets, goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson and defenders Adam Yates, John McCombe, Gareth Owen and Lee Collins will be out to continue Vale`s defensive resilience.

Match Report

Craddock ends Vale run Tom Craddock struck twice for Oxford United as ended league leaders Port Vale's fantastic run of form with a 2-1 win. And his winner came in dramatic fashion in stoppage time, just a minute after Gareth Owen had snatched an equaliser that had looked like bringing Micky Adams' men a point. The Valiants were bidding for a seventh successive win but they were stopped in their tracks first by Craddock's 61st-minute header in a thrilling encounter at the Kassam Stadium. Running in from deep the former Luton striker planted an eight-yard header past Stuart Tomlinson and into the far corner of the goal. However, as the game entered injury time, centre back Owen popped up in the area to drive in a leveller from 15 yards. But Vale's joy at that goal almost immediately turned to disappointment as substitute Matt Green touched a pass to his left and Craddock coolly slotted home his second - and the winner. Ryan Clarke had kept the U's on level terms earlier with a terrific from Gary Roberts' angled drive, showing a strong left hand to turn it around his post. And Justin Richards squandered a great chance to net against one of his former clubs when he blazed over from eight yards after the referee played good advantage, but the encounter was decided in injury time.
