Match Preview

Oxford's Wright return Oxford manager Chris Wilder will be boosted by the return of Jake Wright from suspension when his side host Gillingham. The 24-year-old centre-back missed the defeats to Torquay, Burton and Rotherham after receiving his marching orders for violent conduct during the 5-0 loss against Bradford in October. However, he is expected to go straight back in alongside Ben Futcher, who will be making his home debut after signing on loan. Fellow loanees Paul Wotton and Steve MacLean are also likely to make their home debuts, with the latter expected to continue in attack alongside James Constable who is back to full fitness after missing the Torquay game and only making the bench against Rotherham due to illness. Midfielder Sam Deering is unavailable after completing a loan move to Conference side Newport. He will stay with the South Wales club until January. Alfie Potter and Tom Craddock will be vying for the other forward place if Wilder sticks with a 4-3-3 formation but he could revert back to the 4-4-2 used in the 1-0 defeat at Burton. Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler`s defence will be boosted by the return of Matt Lawrence for the trip. The 36-year-old former Wycombe, Millwall and Fulham centre-half sat out the 3-1 defeat against Crewe as a precautionary measure after limping out of the 2-0 FA Cup first round defeat to Dover with a hamstring injury. However, he is likely to go straight back into the starting line-up after last week`s defensive performance. John Nutter will return from suspension and Danny Spiller will also return but youth team captain Callum Davies is banned. The 17-year-old was dismissed in the 28th minute of his debut last week for a professional foul on Clayton Donaldson. Simon King (ankle), Garry Richards (toe), Andy Barcham (ankle) and Curtis Weston (thigh) are all nearing fitness but are likely to be left out until after the reserve-team game with Wycombe on November 30. Mark Bentley, Dean Rance (both metatarsal), Jack Payne (foot) and Mark McCammon (Achilles) are all out.

Match Report

Gills finally break away curse Cody McDonald's first-half winner brought Gillingham their first away win in 18 months with a 1-0 victory at Oxford. The striker, on a season-long loan from Norwich, bagged his fifth goal of the season in the 40th minute when pouncing on a weak backpass from Oxford's new captain Jake Wright. McDonald rounded keeper Ryan Clarke and slotted home with ease. It was a lead Andy Hessenthaler's team, who had not won for 30 away league games, thoroughly deserved. Charlie Lee also went close with a first-time effort and both Chris Whelpdale and Charlie Lee planted headers wide. Oxford improved in the second half when top scorer James Constable came on to offer striker Steve Maclean some support, but with so many changes in recent weeks, they still lacked their opponents' teamwork and understanding. Gills keeper Alan Julian pushed Alfie Potter's shot on the turn around a post, and beat out a fierce drive from Steve Maclean after industrious play by Constable. Simon Clist had a free-kick tipped over, and Tom Craddock drilled a shot wide late on. The Kent side defended well to hold out, but out-of-form Oxford, who slipped to their fifth straight defeat, were booed off by their fans at the end.
