Match Preview

Gross: League doesn't matter now Stuttgart boss Christian Gross has urged his side to forget about their Bundesliga woes when they take on Odense BK in the Europa League. The Germans slipped to the foot of their domestic table on the back of a 4-1 thrashing at home to Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend, their fifth defeat in their opening six league games. But they have started their European campaign in more impressive fashion and go into the game top of Group H thanks to their opening 3-0 win over Young Boys. "We need to look ahead now and, on Thursday, free our thoughts from the Bundesliga in order to be in the correct mental state for the Europa League," Gross said on Stuttgart's official website. "Odense is a challenge that we must rise to. "We have to get back on track as quickly as possible. That is done only step by step, through small successes. "We will achieve them only through targeted, hard work. We find ourselves in an uncomfortable situation, which we have only ourselves to thank for, but we can't still be devastated now." Gross has announced his intention to make changes for the game in Denmark, revealing Cristian Molinaro and Stefano Celozzi were likely to start at full-back and midfielder Mamadou Bah, a summer signing from Strasbourg, could make his debut. Despite his side's poor form, the former Tottenham boss expects three points. "That is a very important game. We made a good start in the Europa League with the 3-0 win in Bern and we want to maintain our position in the table at all costs. We will need to be compact, determined and avoid conceding any goals. I'm expecting a positive result from my team," said Gross. Odense were beaten 2-1 at Spanish side Getafe in their group opener. They go into the match having beaten Lyngby 3-1 on Monday to lie fourth in the Danish SAS-Liga after 10 games, already 12 points behind leaders FC Copenhagen. "Of course they will try to win their home game," added Gross. "I expect a well-organised team, who will be aggressive. Up front they have quick strikers, who are also good technically. "At the back they a very solid and have plenty of experience."

Match Report

Stuttgart win again Stuttgart's strong start to the Europa League group stage continued with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Danish outfit Odense BK. Stuttgart boss Christian Gross has presided over a miserable start to the new German Bundesliga season but his players are firing on all cylinders in Europe and made it two wins out of two in Group H thanks to goals from Zdravko Kuzmanovic and Martin Harnik. The hosts briefly drew level through Andreas Johansson but overall were outclassed by Stuttgart on their way to a second successive defeat that leaves them bottom of the group. Christian Gentner fizzed an early shot wide for the visitors, who were desperate for a lift after slipping to the foot of their domestic table on the back of a 4-1 thrashing at home to Bayer Leverkusen at the weekend. The hosts soon settled to their task, however, and after 29 minutes Chris Sorensen unleashed their first effort on the Stuttgart goal, which was well dealt with by Sven Ulreich. Two minutes later former Manchester United goalkeeper Roy Carroll came to the rescue for Odense, producing a fine save from Kuzmanovic's firmly-stuck 20-yard effort. The Northern Irishman was back in the thick of the action again nine minutes into the second period, this time parrying away Cacau's header from Stefano Celozzi's free-kick. Carroll's exploits were proving the difference between the two sides and he again kept the scoreline blank on 65 minutes when he reacted smartly to tip Cacau's goalbound effort around the post. But the home goal was finally breached on 72 minutes as Stuttgart's pressure told. Gentner was the architect, his cross finding the head of Kuzmanovic who steered the ball into the bottom-right corner. Harnik replaced Cacau on 73 minutes and almost made an immediate impact, the substitute firing a shot against the post two minutes after his introduction. Harnik was also denied by the impressive Carroll on 77 minutes, just moments before the hosts pulled level. Sorensen created the opening with good work on the left, his cross finding Johansson who had an easy task to prod home from close range. But Stuttgart were not to be denied and with four minutes remaining the lively Harnik got the goal his eye-catching cameo deserved as he fired a powerful shot into the top-right corner of Carroll's goal from the edge of the area. Odense failed to up the ante in the remaining minutes - Oliver Feldballe's optimistic long-range effort their only chance of note - as Stuttgart held on for a deserved victory.
