Notts County earned three vital points in their scrap against relegation on the strength of a commanding display in the first 45 minutes when Acrrington Stanley were over-run.

The visitors must have been relieved to go in at the break only one goal in arrears - a goal they will feel should have been prevented.

It followed one of County's five first-half corners when Neil MacKenzie's flighted ball landed invitingly at the feet of Ryan Jarvis, who was given far too much space before picking his spot with a low drive.

It was Jarvis' first goal at Meadow Lane and was greeted with a huge roar by the third biggest crowd of the season - the home supporters being admitted for the first time to the Spion Kop goal after a change of policy by Notts.Myles Weston was the danger man of the first half, but neither he nor Notts were as threatening again after the break at which point Accrington made a double substitution.

They were particularly transformed by the introduction of Shaun Whalley, who himself went close to an equaliser on 66 minutes before setting up Paul Mullin, who missed badly on 75 minutes.

It was a nervy finish to the end of an exciting contest which Notts were glad to see through and to keep a clean sheet.

Notts might have relieved the tension if Weston had not been hauled down by Philip Edwards when in full flight.

With the crowd baying for Edwards' dismissal, he was shown only a yellow card, presumably on the basis that he was not the last offender.

Six minutes from the end and with Notts under increasing pressure, Ian Craney flashed Accrington's final effort wide of Russell Hoult's goal.
