Match Report

Nottingham Forest powered their way into the Championship as they beat Yeovil 3-2 to claim their sixth win in seven matches to overtake Doncaster Rovers on a dramatic final day.

Yeovil had beaten Colin Calderwood's side in the play-off semi-final last season.

But this time they could not stand between the Reds and promotion as the home side rampaged into a 3-1 lead inside the first half thanks to goals from Julian Bennett, Kris Commons and Lewis McGugan.

With Doncaster failing to win at Cheltenham, the result was enough to lift Forest into second place and secure promotion after three seasons in League One.

McGugan, who had netted the vital winner at Hartlepool last weekend, almost struck in the first five minutes as he lashed a similar, rifled effort narrowly wide of the post.

But it was Bennett, who had been presented with the Forest player of the season award prior to kick-off, who was to make the telling impact in the 12th minute.

A typically rigorous challenge from the full-back robbed Marvin Williams of possession on the left side of the Yeovil area, before Bennett collected the loose ball himself and bent it low into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

And it got even better for the home side as, six minutes later, they doubled their advantage following some scrappy defending.

Yeovil gave the ball away 25 yards from their own goal and Brett Ormerod supplied an incisive pass for Commons, who slid a simple-right foot finish through the legs of advancing keeper Steve Mildenhall.

Forest's celebrations were short-lived however as a moment of indecision in their own defence allowed Marcus Stewart to feed Jaime Peters who made it 2-1 just two minutes later.

Rampant Forest's momentum was maintained however as, after Chris Cohen had been fouled 22 yards from goal, McGugan stepped-up to bend an unstoppable free-kick beyond Mildenhall as he stretched high to his left.

They came close to a fourth as a towering Wes Morgan header was deflected inches wide of the post, while Nathan Tyson just failed to get his head onto a Commons cross when the slightest of connections would have lead to a goal.

Yeovil missed a glorious opportunity of their own after Williams broke clear but lofted a chip well wide of the target.

The second half was more of a closely fought affair with Forest happy to sit on their lead, although it took a goal line clearance from Terry Skiverton to deny Tyson after he had carried the ball around Mildenhall and shot from a tight angle.

Yeovil sub Andy Kirk made it nervous for the Reds as he glanced home a header from a corner in the 74th minute.

But Forest held on to claim the three points that were enough to prompt scenes of joy at a sold out City Ground.
