Match Preview

Forest wait on Lynch Nottingham Forest are waiting to see if Joel Lynch will recover in time for the visit of Peterborough on Boxing Day. Lynch limped out of the goalless draw against Bristol City last weekend after his recent groin problem flared up again. Brendan Moloney or Guy Moussi could be asked to partner Luke Chambers at the heart of the defence if Lynch is ruled out. Moloney replaced Lynch at Ashton Gate and produced an impressive performance. Moussi, who was suspended against City, swapped his usual midfield duties for a defensive role against Crystal Palace a fortnight ago following Wes Morgan`s injury. Morgan remains sidelined with ankle ligament damage, along with striker Ishmael Miller (foot) and long-term absentee Chris Cohen (knee). Garath McCleary is battling to be fit after the forward missed the trip to Bristol with a slight knock. Peterborough have received a major injury boost. Midfielder Lee Frecklington is now almost certain to be fit for the Boxing Day trip to the City Ground after responding superbly to treatment for a groin injury. Frecklington has been nursing the problem for several weeks and was forced off for the second successive game last weekend during Posh`s 1-0 home victory over Coventry. It was thought the 26-year-old may need surgery to resolve the issue, but after visiting the same specialist who helped Tommy Rowe overcome a similar injury last season, he played a full part in training on Wednesday. Manager Darren Ferguson could also have Lee Tomlin available after the knee injury he sustained against the Sky Blues turned out to be nowhere near as bad as the club first feared. Initial concerns of ligament damage proved wide of the mark and the forward has an outside of lining up against Forest. Even if that does not come to fruition, Tomlin should figure at Middlesbrough on New Year's Eve and at home to Birmingham on January 2. Meanwhile, long-term injury victim Mark Little is already back running after a recent groin operation and is on course to return next month.

Match Report

Boyd returns to haunt Forest George Boyd marked his return to the City Ground by scoring the only goal of the game to pile more misery on Nottingham Forest, whose goal drought now stands at six npower Championship matches. Boyd joined Forest on loan from Peterborough in March 2010 for the remainder of the season and helped the Reds to reach the Championship play-offs, where they lost to Blackpool in the semi-finals. His move to the two-time European champions did not work out and he returned to Posh that summer. Boyd's strike after 20 minutes gave Peterborough successive league victories for only the second time this campaign and condemned struggling Forest to a fifth defeat in six matches. Forest lost Paul Anderson to injury after just six minutes. He was replaced by Garath McCleary, who forced Posh goalkeeper Joe Lewis to tip a 20-yard effort round a post shortly after his introduction. At the other end, Paul Taylor worked Lee Camp with a shot from outside the area. However, there was nothing Camp could do to keep out Boyd's superb curler from the right-hand side of the box. The goal seemed to shake the home side's confidence and Emile Sinclair went close before Taylor forced Camp into a superb save with a shot from the edge of the area after 37 minutes. Taylor worked Camp again at the start of the second half before Forest came close to an equaliser when Tom Kennedy hacked a header by Marcus Tudgay off the line. That seemed to encourage Forest and Lewis McGugan shot over the crossbar before the same played spurned a glorious chance to bring the Reds level. McGugan was put through on goal by Dexter Blackstock but he lifted his effort over the advancing Lewis and the crossbar. Taylor and then Tommy Lowe had chances to seal the points for Peterborough but both missed the target. Posh were almost made to pay for those two misses when, with a minute remaining, substitute Andy Reid crossed the ball to McCleary and he powered his header straight at the chest of Lewis from close-range. It meant Forest, who remain in the bottom three, had failed to score in their last six matches, the club's worst run without a goal since the 2003-04 season.
