Scotland kept their faltering World Cup campaign alive after a Kenny Miller double gave them victory in the Ullevaal Stadium in Oslo.

It was a disciplined and, at times, dominant display by Walter Smith's side as they built on Saturday's encouraging draw with Italy.

But Scotland still only have an outside chance of gaining a play-off place and require Norway to drop points in their final two matches against Moldova and Belarus.

Scotland started nervously and Andy Webster made a fine last-ditch challenge on John Arne Riise before Claus Lundekvam had the ball in the net.

Fortunately for Scotland, Luxembourg referee Alain Hamer spotted an infringement which was not obvious.

But Norway did not threaten for the rest of the first half and all Craig Gordon had to deal with was a tame looping header from John Carew which bounced into his arms.

Scotland made the breakthrough after 21 minutes when James McFadden headed on a Barry Ferguson cross and Miller touched the ball past the stranded Thomas Myhre.

Scotland visibly grew in confidence after the goal and nine minutes later Miller scored his second after a blunder by the Norwegian defence.

Paul Hartley's cross did not carry any threat until Andre Bergdolmo headed the ball into the path of Miller who kept his composure to lash a right-foot shot past Myhre.

Miller had a chance of a hat-trick six minutes from the break when he was unmarked at the back post but his shot struck a defender and bounced to safety.

The Wolves striker lasted only one more minute as he had to go off with a back injury to be replaced by Neil McCann.

Norway made three changes at half-time and immediately looked more menacing with Gordon doing well to block a close-range shot from Christian Grindheim.

Carew then forced another good save from the goalkeeper with a downwards header but the goalkeeper was not over-worked with Norway bereft of ideas.

It took a great save from Myhre with 15 minutes left to block a McCann shot after substitute Craig Beattie played the ball across goal.

Norway came back strongly in the final ten minutes and pulled a goal back with a low shot from substitute Ole Martin Aarst.
