Match Preview

Johnson boost for Cobblers John Johnson will be available for Northampton when they host Swindon on New Year's Eve. Defender Johnson was sent off after just 18 minutes of the home defeat to Burton on Boxing Day for allegedly elbowing Albion captain John McGrath in a challenge. Northampton appealed against the decision and on Thursday the Football Association overturned referee Andy Madley's ruling, meaning Johnson escapes a three-match suspension. Adebayo Akinfenwa will be among those looking for a recall after the experienced striker started on the bench against Burton. Aidy Boothroyd is still without a win since taking over as manager three games ago. The Cobblers have not won in 11 League Two matches, losing on nine occasions, since beating Barnet 2-1 at Underhill on October 1. Swindon will be without striker Jake Jervis. The Robins hope to secure the Birmingham frontman's services until the end of the season or on a permanent basis when the January transfer window opens, but his current loan deal at the County Ground has expired making him ineligible for the meeting with the Cobblers. That leaves either Alan Connell or Ronan Murray to lead the line for the Wiltshire outfit, alongside Czech hitman Lukas Magera, after manager Paolo Di Canio confirmed that Mehdi Kerrouche would be left out of his squad altogether once again. Kerrouche has not featured for Swindon since the 1-1 draw at Bristol Rovers on December 10 and Di Canio said leaving the Algerian at home this weekend was a "technical decision". Meanwhile, full-back Liam Ridehalgh has returned to Huddersfield after the Robins decided not to extend his loan deal from the npower League One club. Callum Kennedy is likely to fill in on the left of defence.

Match Report

McCormack's late winner downs Cobblers Alan McCormack grabbed a dramatic stoppage-time winner as 10-man Swindon came from behind to beat Northampton 2-1. Michael Jacobs gave the Cobblers a 22nd-minute lead from the penalty spot after he had been tripped by Jonathan Smith as he waltzed into the box. Saido Berahino almost doubled Northampton's led after the restart when his header was superbly saved by Wes Foderingham. But Swindon stepped up a gear with Oliver Risser poking a shot wide at the near post and substitute Simon Ferry glancing a header wide. Substitute Alan Connell finally equalised in the 66th minute, getting on the end of Risser's pinpoint pass to turn inside Ashley Corker and find the bottom corner of the net from 12 yards. Risser was then red carded for a challenge on John Johnson in the 78th minute. Connell failed to connect with Murray's inviting low cross in the 88th minute and Berahino blazed over two minutes later. But McCormark hit the winner from close range three minutes into in stoppage-time after being picked out by Raffaele De Vita. That prompted wild scenes on the Swindon bench and manager Paolo Di Canio was sent to the stands for his over-zealous celebrations.
