Match Preview

McKenzie in line for Cobblers bow Northampton manager Ian Sampson could hand a debut to Leon McKenzie when Southend visit Sixfields. The former Norwich and Coventry striker penned a deal with the Cobblers until the end of the season this week and should play some part - though he is lacking match fitness having not played since being released by Charlton in May. Tadhg Purcell had an operation on his cruciate knee injury on Wednesday evening but is out for the season while left-back Marcus Hall is a fortnight away from returning from a hamstring injury. However midfielder Ryan Gilligan has decided to postpone a planned ankle operation and could feature after training this week without any discomfort. Paul Walker will be back on the bench as cover for goalkeeper Chris Dunn after Oscar Mansion's loan from Spurs ended, while Craig Hinton remains on the sidelines with his knee problem. Barry Corr is back in the Southend squad for the encounter. The Irish striker, who has two goals to his name so far this season, missed last weekend's win over Torquay after suffering a back spasm on Friday evening. But he returned to training on Thursday and will be available to boss Paul Sturrock. Centre-half Mark Phillips is therefore the only injury absentee with a hamstring problem which has sidelined him for the last three weeks. Fellow defender Peter Gilbert travels to his former club for the first time since he left after failing to sign a new deal at Sixfields over the summer. The in-form Shrimpers are looking for their fourth straight win.

Match Report

Andy Holts Southend run Andy Holt grabbed the late winner as Northampton finally secured their first victory of the season at the sixth attempt with a 2-1 win over Southend. But they had to come from behind to earn all three points against a Southend side looking for their third win on the bounce. New signing Leon McKenzie almost marked his Northampton debut with a goal in the second minute but his shot was deflected wide after Ryan Gilligan's volley was blocked. Abdul Osman also saw a shot blocked while at the other end Blair Sturrock wasted a good chance for Southend after being put clear by the impressive Louie Soares. Ryan Hall tested Northampton keeper Chris Dunn just before the break and Anthony Grant went close with a 25-yard free-kick shortly after the restart. And it was Grant who broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when he volleyed home a cross from Bilel Mohsni. But Osman equalised in the 63rd minute and Holt headed home the winner from Michael Jacobs' corner. Osman went close to grabbing a second in the 84th minute but his header hit the post.
