Match Preview

Lee gears up for first league clash Caretaker manager David Lee could hand a start to Arron Davies in his first game in charge of Northampton at home to Shrewsbury. Lee takes over, with Andy Holt as his assistant, following the departure of Gary Johnson on Monday. Davies came on as a substitute during the FA Cup defeat at Luton last weekend and the midfielder could make his first start since returning from his back and hamstring problems. On-loan midfielder Derek Niven has been receiving treatment for a shin injury at parent club Chesterfield but the Scot could return to Sixfields in time for the game. Defenders Byron Webster and Nana Ofori-Twumasi are long-term absentees but there is now a chance for every other squad member to stake their claim following the departure of Johnson. Shrewsbury welcome back James Collins and Tom Bradshaw into their ranks for the trip. The pair missed last weekend`s FA Cup first-round trip to Newport County due to international commitments with the Republic of Ireland and Wales` Under-21 squads respectively, with Shrews avoiding a potential banana skin thanks to Terry Gornell`s header just before half-time. However, manager Graham Turner has a defensive dilemma after Jermaine Grandison was forced off against the non-league side with a hamstring tear which will keep him sidelined for up to six weeks. He joins fellow defenders Carl Regan (hamstring) and Reuben Hazell (knee) in the treatment room, with Connor Goldson set to step in at right-back. On-loan midfielder James Wallace is also unavailable once again at Sixfields as he serves the second game of a three-match suspension.

Match Report

Shrews in seventh heaven Mark Wright bagged a brace to set Shrewsbury on the way to a 7-2 demolition of managerless Northampton. The Cobblers parted company with boss Gary Johnson during the week and Shrewsbury all but had the points in the bag by half-time, having raced into a 3-0 lead. Wright opened the scoring in the 17th minute when he exchanged passes with Matt Richards before seeing his 18 yard shot take a wicked deflection to wrong foot Sam Walker. The Cobblers keeper did well to foil Terry Gornell before Wright doubled Shrewsbury's advantage in the 39th minute, pouncing to score from close range. Aaron Wildig extended Shrewsbury's lead two minutes before the break when his deflected shot beat Walker. Ben Tozer gave the hosts a fighting chance when he reduced the arrears three minutes after the restart, his 20 yard free kick going through the wall and past a rooted Chris Neal. Northampton upped the tempo and Saido Berahino missed a great chance from close range while Michael Jacobs should have scored from his third opportunity, firing wide from 15 yards. At the other end, Walker did well to deny Wright his hat-trick after the striker burst into the box, but Marvin Morgan ended any hopes of a late comeback in the 81st minute, applying a neat finish after being set up by the impressive Sean McAllister. Adebayo Akinfenwa pulled another goal back with a curling effort in the 85th minute but substitute James Collins hit a fifth goal two minute later. Joe Jacobson grabbed number six in stoppage time from a tight angle and Kelvin Langmead completed a miserable day for the Cobblers with an own goal just before the final whistle.
