Match Preview
Two of the Premier League's in-form teams meet at the JJB Stadium with a possible place in the top half of the table on offer to the winners.
Wigan Athletic have not played for almost a fortnight because of Manchester United's participation in the Club World Cup but have picked up 14 points from their last seven league matches since losing 2-0 at Fulham in late October.
Since then the Latics' only loss came in the 1-0 defeat at Arsenal earlier this month and during the impressive sequence they have beaten Portsmouth, Everton, West Brom and Blackburn as well as drawing with Newcastle United at St James' Park and Stoke City.
Even though Emile Heskey and Antonio Valencia are being linked with JJB Stadium departures in January, Steve Bruce has moulded a squad together that seems unlikely to become embroiled in a relegation dog-fight in the second half of the campaign.
Wigan's break from Premier League action has done wonders for their injury problems with Emmerson Boyce (hamstring) their only doubt for the Boxing Day clash.
Newcastle have also enjoyed a revival in fortunes in the last two months with Joe Kinnear guiding the Magpies to a six-game unbeaten run.
That sequence included four successive draws before an impressive 3-0 win at Portsmouth was followed by a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Tottenham at St James' Park.
The goals have suddenly started flowing with United finding the back of the net seven times in their last three matches and the feel-good factor finally seems to have returned to Tyneside.
It is all a far cry from the end of September when a home defeat to Blackburn, their fifth successive loss, left the club seemingly on course for relegation.
Since that setback though, Kinnear has seen his side lose only two of their 12 league games as they have moved into the comparative safety of mid-table.
Oba Martins remains a doubt for the trip to the JJB Stadium as he continues his recovery from the groin strain he sustained in the win at Pompey, while Shola Ameobi could also miss out after limping out of the victory against Spurs with a hamstring problem.

Match Report
Hot-shot Ryan Taylor - the fans' choice as Wigan's best ever dead-ball specialist - did it again, scoring for the fourth consecutive match against the Magpies.
Out of contract in the summer, Taylor put himself in the shop window with another terrific free-kick to beat Shay Given from around 25 yards.
Then the Latics wrapped up the three points with a second-half penalty from Amr Zaki, who hammered in his ninth Premier League goal of the season.
It came when Newcastle defender Sebastien Bassong brought down Emile Heskey to earn himself a red card - ref Mike Dean being spot on to allow play to continue as the Wigan striker battled his way into the box despite being initially fouled outside the area.
A late goal from Danny Guthrie - also from the penalty spot - meant a nail-biting finish but it proved a mere consolation for the visitors.
The Latics made one change to the starting line-up with Wilson Palacios back from suspension to take over from Michael Brown in midfield.
Newcastle had Damien Duff in for the injured Shola Ameobi while Mark Viduka was called up when Enrique was injured during the warm-up.
Michael Owen produced the first threat of the game racing onto the pass from Duff but Paul Scharner read it perfectly to make the crucial tackle.
A slip by Taylor almost let Jonas Gutierrez in but Chris Kirkland came up with the save and, from the corner, Viduka's header was blocked by Mario Melchiot.
Zaki then clipped a great ball across the face of goal but there was no one there to cash in, and Antonio Valencia was inches away from breaking the deadlock flicking the shot just wide from Zaki's cross.
Referee Dean was unimpressed by Wigan's penalty appeal when Duff appeared to handle.
But the breakthrough came from that trademark Taylor free-kick which into the top corner although he missed the chance to double the lead in first-half stoppage time.
In a frantic second half, Given kept out another effort from Taylor and. Kirkland had to be alert racing out to head clear as Owen bore down on goal.
But Zaki's spot-kick was the killer, and Wigan almost had a third when Given tipped away a shot from Wilson Palacios.
Newcastle pulled one back when Guthrie scored from the spot after Andrew Carroll went down under the challenge from Kirkland. And at the death, Duff lashed wide to blow the chance of an equaliser.
