Match Report

Sunderland travel to St James' Park to take on Newcastle United in a Tyne-Wear derby which could see them secure their Premier League safety with a win.

The Black Cats are already all but certain of survival as they lead third-bottom Bolton Wanderers by seven points with four games to play.

Newcastle are three points better off than their visitors and will be hoping to maintain their strong recent run of form, which has seen them win three and draw two of their last five outings.

Magpies manager Kevin Keegan seems to have found the magic formula in attack, with Obafemi Martins operating on the left, in support of Mark Viduka and skipper Michael Owen.

Keegan has already stated that he is unlikely to make any changes to the side which drew 0-0 at Portsmouth last time out, saying: "We'll leave it alone and let the other players wait for the opportunity. Let's see when they get that chance, whether they can really take it.

"We're going forward. We're a work in progress and hopefully we'll learn from the things we didn't do so well.

"The 4-3-3 formation is still working and we're still creating. We're still causing other teams problems."

James Milner and Stephen Carr could earn spots on the bench after injuries, but the game comes too early for Emre and Claudio Cacapa.

Visiting boss Roy Keane has warned his players not to think that the job of securing their top-flight status has been achieved.

He commented earlier in the week: "There's still everything to play for in these remaining few games and the most important of them is getting the points on the board which will ensure we can't be relegated.

"We've done well in recent weeks, getting a couple of away wins and managing three victories in a row, but we have to press on from here.

"A lot of stuff has been written saying we're safe now, but that's absolute nonsense until it's mathematically certain that we can't go down."

Keane has few injury problems, but may decide to hand a starting role to winger Carlos Edwards, who was on the bench against Manchester City last weekend.
