Match Report

Newcastle United have the ideal opportunity to win their third successive Premier League match when rock-bottom Derby County visit St James' Park on Sunday.

The pressure has eased on boss Sam Allardyce since the dark days of successive home drubbings by Portsmouth and Liverpool, with the battling draw against Arsenal helping to revive confidence on Tyneside.

Since that point, Allardyce's side grabbed a last-gasp winner against Birmingham City before winning 1-0 at Fulham thanks to Joey Barton's stoppage-time penalty, but performances are still below-par.

Home fans will be keen to see more style against a Derby side that already looks certain to be making an immediate return to the Championship after losing their last seven Premier League matches.

The Rams have scored only one goal - in the 4-1 defeat at Manchester United - during that dismal sequence and do not appear to have the quality to improve their position in the second half of the campaign.

Allardyce has decided not to risk Michael Owen or Damien Duff in the game as both players step up their comebacks from injury.

Owen has been out of action since suffering a thigh muscle problem in last month's England friendly against Austria but it had been anticipated that the injury-plagued striker would be fit for Sunday's match.

However, the 28-year-old did not take part in a reserve team outing against local rivals Middlesbrough on Tuesday and, although Duff did feature in that game, he is still not fit enough to play first-team football as he battles back from the dislocated foot he suffered in April.

Stephen Carr, Amady Faye and Peter Ramage also remain in the treatment room, while Derby boss Paul Jewell will definitely be without the services of Andy Todd.

Elsewhere, Marc Edworthy faces a race against time as he battles back from a thigh problem.

Newcastle beat Derby 1-0 the last time the two teams met at St James' Park more than six years ago.
