Good run by Lennon. He tries to pick out Defoe but the ball is deflected up in the air. Keane retrieves possession and plays it left to Defoe but his right foot shot is charged down and cleared.

The referee's assistant signals that there will be 3 minutes of stoppage time.

Newcastle trying to exert some late pressure. Ball to the left finds Martins who plays it inside but as he goes for the return he slips and the danger is over.

Great chance for Newcastle to equalise. The ball is played in between the two Tottenham centre backs and Martin gets in behind them. He chests the ball forward but is slightly stretching for the shot and fires over from about 5 yards.

Lennon runs at Newcastle in the final third. He knocks the ball past Duff but Bassong covers well and clears the danger.

fine run from Modric down the right for Tottenham, but he's just crowded out by three Newcastle men and dispossessed.

Huddlestone drives forward from halfway. He shoots right footed from 30 yards and it opens up in front of him, but the ball just goes wide of Harper's right hand post.

Shout from Newcastle for a penalty. Ball in from the right by Gutierrez. Martins tries to get on the end of it and goes down under Woodgate's challenge, but it looks to be a good one and the referee waves play on.

Time just starting to ebb away for Newcastle and it's not looking like an equaliser is going to come.

Dangerous free-kick into the box from Modric but Newcastle just about clear.

Assou-Ekotto takes but it's into the wall and away for a corner to Tottenham. Ball into the centre of the box, headed well by Woodgate, but it's straight at Harper who saves well.

Half chance for Newcastle. Martins turns smartly on the edge of the area. His first shot is deflected high in the air. He challenges Corluka and the ball somehow finds it way to him for a second effort but it's straight at Gomes.

Defoe is stripping off ready on the bench and it looks like he'll be entering the action for Spurs very shortly.

Martins gets some space down the left for Newcastle. He crosses low towards Viduka. He lays it back for Smith running onto it, but his 30yard effort is well high and wide.

Long ball forward is headed only as far as Viduka. He strikes on the volley from 25 yards but Woodgate does well to close the shot down and it's out for a Newcastle corner.

Low ball in again from the right but no one makes a run across the near post and Harper goes down well to collect.

fine run and effort from Lennon. He cuts in from the right and drives across goal. He finds space for a left footed effort down to the keeper's left but it's fractionally wide with Harper rooted.

Good pressure by Owen and Corluka is forced into playing the ball out for a corner. Ball is whipped in Gomes comes and doesn't get near it. The ball is fired at Martins who appears to handle before firing the ball home well but the fre-kick is given.

Huddlestone plays in Bent through the middle but the pass is just too heavy and Harper is out well to smother the ball.

Hutton drives forward down the right but he's fouled rashly by Smith and Spurs have a free-kick about 35 yards out on the right hand touchline.

Corner comes in towards Martins. He rises well to head but it deflects off Corluka and over. To the Newcastle man's frustration a goal kick is given.

Corner to Newcastle. Ryan Taylor feeds Martins down the right. Corluka gets a toe in to prevent Martins from beating him but the ball is out of play for a corner.

Good low drive from the right by Hutton. It looks to be flashing across the edge of the six yard box, but it's intercepted and cleared by the visitors.

Should have been 2-0. Bent's released down the left. He crosses low towards Keane but it's intercepted. The ball only goes as far as the edge of the area. Palacios follows up and shoots, but Beye throws himself in front of the ball & charges it down.

Loose pass square across the Newcastle back line, almost releases Modric but he can't get a clean toe on the ball and deflects off of him and out for a goal kick.

Corner comes in towards Carroll, but Woodgate just does enough to prevent the Newcastle man from steering his effort on goal. Some desperate defending from Tottenham follows, but they finally clear the danger.

Corner to Newcastle. Ball in from the right by Ryan Taylor is cleared by Corluka, but it's gone behind.

Good cross from Lennon again from the right, but it's too far in front of any Spurs attackers and it drifts out to the far side of the pitch.

Free-kick hammered in by Huddlestone but it hits the back of a defender and flies away to safety.

Patient play from Spurs down the right results in Lennon's right hand cross being handled by Butt and the home side have a free-kick in a dangerous position on the edge of the area on the right hand side.

Newcastle have looked more positive in this opening 5 minutes of the second half. Smith gets the ball on the right, but his cross is overhit and lands harmlessly on the roof of the net.

Great chance for Keane to double Spurs lead but it's out for a corner. Long ball from the back aims for Bent. The ball beats him and his marker and bounces through for Keane at the far post but Bassong blocks Keane's shot and deflects it away.

First attack of the half from Newcastle. Ball forward down the right. Smith duck out of the way and it almost runs through to Nolan, but Gomes is out well to smother.

Great start from Spurs right from the kick off. Hutton is free down the right and puts in a tempting low cross, but it's cleared well by Newcastle.

Despite a number of chances to increase their lead, Redknapp will be wary that his side are not yet out of sight. Bent should've scored with a header, Modric has had one deflected in to the keeper and Huddlestone has been unlucky twice from distance.

Spurs look like continuing their fine home form. Modric has been instrumental in a great deal of Tottenham attacking endeavours.

Alan Shearer will face another tough half-time team talk to raise his troops, who have offered little in attack, struggled in possession and could have been further behind.

The ball drops short at the near post and as Tottenham clears the referee blows for half time.

Corner to Newcastle and this will probably be the last action of the half.

Fantastic cross from the right by Hutton. It's deep to the far post and finds Bent who should score from 2 yards, but he heads over.

Good chance for Newcastle. Sloppy defending by Spurs allows Gutierrez to get the ball on the left hand edge of the area. Owen is completely unmarked in the centre but Gutierrez can't get any power on his cross and it dribbles through to Gomes.

Lennon takes on Steven Taylor on the right hand side. He steps over the ball and knocks it by his man, driving for the penalty area. He goes down looking for a free-kick, but the referee waves play on.

Another attack from Spurs. Huddlestone shots from 25 yards, left-footed. It's a good effort and it looks like Harper has tipped it over, but the referee signals for a goal-kick.

Modric is really looking a threat for Spurs. His probing passes have caused Newcastle lots of problems and the visitors will need to get hold of him if they're going to stay in this match.

Modric's shot is deflected off 2 Newcastle defenders and somehow it stops right in front of Harper on the line.

So nearly 2-0. Good ball from Huddlestone from the right hand side, low across the area. It just eludes Bent and Keane, but Keane gets to the ball at the back post and lays back for Modric.

Almost another chance for the home side. The ball comes into the box from the left. It's not cleared first time and Assou-Ekotto looks to get on the end of it, but Beye recovers and the ball is cleared.

Long ball forward from Newcastle down the right looking for Carroll, but the referee's assistant has his flag raised and it'll be a Tottenham free-kick for offside.

The stretcher has come on here and Dawson has remained down for nearly two minutes. It doesn't look as though he'll be taking any further part in the action tihs afternoon.

Dawson goes down injured under a challenge from Carroll and he'll require treatment. It looks like he's landed awkwardly on his left ankle.

Gutierrez tries to break down the left but he is tackled and the ball goes out for a throw-in to the visitors.

Ball down the right channel looking for Bent again. He cuts back to Lennon who crosses to the far post. Modric heads back across goal but Newcastle clear.

Owen cuts in from the left and shoots but it's charged down and Tottenham launch a counter-attack with Bent. Tottenham press around the edge of the Newcastle area and it results in a shot by Huddlestone deflected over for a Spurs corner.

Free kick to Newcaslte for a foul on Duff by Corluka. Ryan Taylor will take for the visitors, 30 yards out on the left.

Harper saves the first effort but Bent squeezes home from a tight angle on the rebound.

Nolan gets a half chance for Newcastle down the left. He turns and shoots but it's saved comfortably by Gomes.

Foul on Gutierrez by Palacios on the left hand side about 35 yards out and it's another chance for Newcastle to get the ball into the Spurs box. Ball whipped in by Taylor, Huddlestone heads it but can't control it and it goes over for a corner.

Newcastle gain their first corner of the game on the right hand side. They've struggled to get possession so far having only a 3rd of the ball and the corner is also wasted, hitting the first defender.

Good play again down the right from Tottenham. Good interchange frees Lennon down the right but his cross can't pick anyone out and is cleared away for a throw-in.

Good ball by Modric down the right hand side of the penalty area looking for Bent. He shoulder charges his man trying to win the ball but the referee spots a foul and Newcastle have the free kick.

Attacking play from Tottenham again. Lennon tries to beat Duff but the ball rebounds from Duff's tackle to Corluka. His cross is only cleared as far as Palacios. He shoots from distance but the shot is charged down.

First corner of the game to the home side.Ball comes in low from the right by Corluka and is hacked clear by Beye and out for a corner. The ball is played short and Spurs find Bent 12 yards out but his shot is straight at Harper.

One-two between Duff and Owen down the left hand side looking to break away for Newcastle, but it's a good tackle by Palacios and Tottenham win back possession.

Good play from Keane. He gets on the end of a ball down the right hand side of the penalty area. He outmuscles Duff and plays the ball low across the box towards Bent, but it's a great interception from Steven Taylor who prevents a certain goal.

Owen picks up the ball 35 yards out and drives towards the Spurs goal. He nicks the ball to Gutierrez, but he turns back on his right foot for the shot and his effort is blocked and away to safety.

Foul by Corluka on Gutierrez and it's a free kick for Newcastle on the half way line out on the left hand side.

Tottenham have started the better side here and are enjoying more of the possession. Good one-two through the middle looks for Modric but it's just intercepted.

Good possession from Spurs around the Newcastle area. Modric tries to work space for a shot, but he's crowded out and the shot is blocked and Newcastle clear.

Free kick to Tottenham on the left hand side 20 yards out for a foul on Palacios. Modric looks to be the one to take this for Spurs.

Ball forward by Ryan Taylor down the right hand side looking for Gutierrez, but it's overhit and through to the Tottenham keeper.

Tottenham try to break down the right hand side with Corluka. The ball is in towards Lennon but Newcastle intercept and the ricochet comes back off a Tottenham player and out for a goal-kick.

It's been a scrappy start, with neither side able to get comfortable possession of the ball.
