Match Report

Sunderland prepare to face Newcastle United in the first Wear-Tyne derby of the season with unhappy manager Roy Keane demanding an improvement.

The Black Cats boss accused his players of failing to step up after they extended their winless run to six league games with Monday's 1-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City.

The result left Sunderland languishing in 15th place in the table and Keane lambasting the performance at Eastlands.

He said: "I've been in football long enough to know that you have to earn the right to get something out of a game.

"You have to step up and make it happen, that's why we are disappointed. There was an opportunity for us to get something out of the game and we let it pass by."

A glance through the history books suggests that history also isn't on the Wearsiders' side as they haven't triumphed over their local rivals for seven years.

Newcastle won both of the meetings the last season Sunderland were in the top-flight in the 2005/06 campaign - 4-1 at the Stadium of Light and 3-2 at St James' Park - however there was one glimmer of hope for the Black Cats.

Michael Chopra, who joined them in a £5million move from Cardiff City in the summer, scored one of Newcastle's four goals in the rout, but will now be looking to get one over his former club.

On the injury front, Sunderland continue to without key players like Dean Whitehead (knee), Kieran Richardson (back), Russell Anderson (ankle) and Dwight Yorke (calf).

However, Andrew Cole could make his long-awaited debut against his former club after proving his fitness, while winger Carlos Edwards has declared himself ready to return from a hamstring injury that has sidelined him since August.

Newcastle United also have a point to prove in Saturday's local derby.

The Magpies were heavily beaten 4-1 at home by Portsmouth last weekend, but the result was a bitter pill to swallow for their long-suffering fans as they were three goals down after just 11 disastrous minutes.

"Disappointed is an understatement - I am devastated by what has happened. I am completely gutted inside," fumed manager Sam Allardyce afterwards.

"The players have be organised, understand how they should play, keep their shape, keep their discipline."

The Magpies have now lost their last two games and have slipped down the table from the European position to 10th place on the back of their recent run.

However, Allardyce has received a boost with the easing of their early season injury woes as just four players remain on the treatment table.

Mark Viduka has shrugged off a calf problem and could return alongside Michael Owen in attack after a six-week absence, but Steve Harper will continue in goal as regular number one Shay Given (groin) is still sidelined.
