Welcome to Old Trafford where Manchester United host managerless Newcastle are the visitors, and they face a daunting task.

Match Report

Managerless Newcastle United travel to Old Trafford hoping for an improvement after a run of two wins in 13 games in all competitions saw boss Sam Allardyce depart the club on Wednesday.

The poor performance at Championship side Stoke City in the FA Cup coupled with the run of disappointing results has led to Allardyce and the Magpies parting company.

Assistant manager Nigel Pearson will take temporary charge at Old Trafford and try and rally the dejected players.

Nicky Butt and stand-in captain Alan Smith are due to face their former employers, with former fans' favourite Smith returning for the first time since his summer switch to the north-east.

The Magpies have been severely depleted by the upcoming African Cup of Nations, losing Obafemi Martins, Geremi, Habib Beye and Abdoulaye Faye for up to a month.

Long-term injury victim Shola Ameobi looks set to miss out again. James Milner may feature if he shakes off a virus, as will Emre if he recovers from a knee injury in time.

With only two away wins all season the odds will be firmly stacked against the Geordie outfit, whose record at Old Trafford in recent years ceases to inspire.

On the contrary, aside from the blip at Upton Park in late December, Manchester United have been imperious of late, winning nine of the last ten in all competitions.

Since the opening day home draw against Reading, Sir Alex Ferguson's men have won every home game in all competitions, aside from the Carling Cup exit to Coventry City.

The Red Devils have no African players to worry about, but will be without the suspended Wes Brown, while long-term absentees Paul Scholes, Mikael Silvestre, and Ben Foster will not feature.

Captain Gary Neville's recovery is gathering speed after featuring in the reserves against Everton on Wednesday, but is unlikely to be in the squad.

However, Argentine striker Carlos Tevez looks set for a return to action after his recovery from a bruised foot.

Last season at Old Trafford the Magpies were brushed aside as two Ole Gunnar Solskjaer goals gave United a 2-0 victory.

But Newcastle will take some heart after holding United to a draw at St James' Park on New Year's Day 2006.
