Match Preview
Alan Shearer may have to re-evaluate his priorities in a bid to preserve his Newcastle United team's Premier League status.
The former England international had seemingly given up hope of getting anything from his side's games at Liverpool and Aston Villa when he said before Monday's St James' Park clash against Portsmouth that he was targeting three home wins to ensure safety.
Having been held to a goalless draw by Pompey, Newcastle may now need to take something from Anfield, as well as beating both Middlesbrough and Fulham on Tyneside, if they are to avoid dropping into the Championship.
However, it is looking increasingly likely that Newcastle, winless in their last nine matches, will be playing Plymouth Argyle, Peterborough United and Doncaster Rovers next term.
Shearer's desperation is such that he is contemplating bringing Joey Barton back into his starting line-up on Merseyside, even though the controversial former Manchester City midfielder has not featured in the first team since January.
Michael Owen, Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins are all now fit but showed in the stalemate with Portsmouth that they are not necessarily the answer to the club's woes as they all wasted presentable scoring opportunities.
With no FA Cup or Champions League distractions, all Liverpool's focus is on the possibility of overhauling Manchester United at the top of the Premier League table.
Since losing at Middlesbrough in February, Rafa Benitez's side have embarked on a fine run in the league, winning six matches and drawing one - the thrilling eight-goal extravaganza against Arsenal.
However, they are still three points behind United and Sir Alex Ferguson's side also have a game in hand.
Steven Gerrard could return to the Reds' starting line-up following his short absence with a groin strain, but Benitez will once again be without Sami Hyypia and Philipp Degen.
With most of Newcastle's injury problems finally clearing up, the only absences are likely to be Jose Enrique (hamstring) and Steven Taylor (ankle).

Match Report
Liverpool closed the gap on Manchester United to three points at the top of the Premier League after beating a woeful Newcastle United 3-0 at Anfield.
Goals from Yossi Benayoun, Dirk Kuyt and substitute Lucas leave the Magpies needing to win their clash with relegation rivals Middlesbrough if they are to stand any chance of staying in the top-flight.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez left star striker Fernando Torres out of the squad for the clash, as Dirk Kuyt assumed the lone striker role with the returning Steven Gerrard in support.
Anfield old boy Michael Owen was sacrificed from the three-man Newcastle attack that failed to score against Portsmouth in their last outing, as Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins were given the task of breaking Liverpool's stern defence.
The Reds' ability to record high scores in recent weeks has been down to their blistering starts to games, but Newcastle held their ground well in the early stages.
Gerrard's long-range effort after 15 minutes brought the best out of Newcastle keeper Steve Harper.
Peter Lovenkrands should have given Shearer's side the lead after rounding Jose Reina though, but his effort was eventually cleared.
With Benitez barking orders from the sidelines, Liverpool changed up a gear and started showing the class that has thrilled the Anfield faithful this season, as they hit Shearer's side with two goals in six minutes.
Newcastle striker Viduka inexplicably headed the ball back into his own area and could only head the ball straight to Kuyt on the right wing. The Dutchman sent in the cross and with a hint of offside, Benayoun slotted home from close range.
Newcastle could blame nobody but themselves when the second came on 28 minutes though as poor marking allowed Kuyt to head home from Gerrard's pinpoint corner.
The away side were in disarray and Shearer could only look on as Xabi Alonso hit the crossbar and Daniel Agger hit a thunderous effort from 30 yards which Harper tipped away.
Shearer was renowned for getting the best out of his team-mates when he was a player, but whatever he said to his team at half-time made little difference as Liverpool continued to press for a third goal.
Spanish winger Albert Riera should have done better with a header, while Gerrard and Javier Mascherano shot wide.
Newcastle were lucky not to be down to ten men on the hour mark after fiery midfielder Alan Smith lunged in on Reds' full-back Alvaro Arbeloa, but referee Phil Dowd only produced a yellow.
Joey Barton wasn't so lucky though and he was given a straight red card after a horrendous two-footed tackle on Alonso.
It got from bad to worse for Newcastle though, as Lucas came off the bench to power home a header from Fabio Aurelio's free-kick.
