Match Report

Feelings could not be more different in the respective Derby County and Newcastle United camps as they face off in Monday's only Premier League clash.

The Rams could be playing to keep their manager, Billy Davies, in a job if reports coming out of Derby are to be believed.

A local newspaper created controversy last week by announcing that a source inside the club told them Paul Jewell had been contacted about replacing Davies as manager.

Players and staff at the club have been falling over themselves to dismiss this as lies and speculation, but Davies is undoubtedly under intense pressure after County's worst ever start to a Premier League season.

They were hammered 6-0 by Liverpool in their last game and little has changed to indicate that their fortunes are about to turn.

Forward Craig Fagan has been handed a four-match ban for stamping on Liverpool's Alvaro Arbeloa, ruling him out until they play at Reading on October 7, while the transfer deadline closed with only Kenny Miller as a major addition to the Rams squad.

Rams fans will look towards the return of Giles Barnes - the talented winger who starred in their promotion from the Championship last season and who has since been linked with a £5million move to West Ham and Tottenham.

However, he is still struggling with a fractured metatarsal, though he could make the bench for this match, although Davies has been very cautious with injuries to his young stars.

The Rams' otherwise empty injury list compares favourably with Newcastle's, which contains six first-team players.

They will be hoping Mark Viduka can recover from a sore hamstring in time to face Derby, but will have to wait one or two months before Stephen Carr and Damien Duff return.

On the pitch the Magpies are currently flying as in their last outing before the international break a Michael Owen late winner gave them the points following a 1-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.

Sam Allardyce's side are unbeaten in their five games in all competitions so far this season and confidence is currently sky-high around St James' Park.
