Match Report

Former Bolton Wanderers manager Sam Allardyce makes a quickfire return to the club where he forged his reputation, having taken charge at Newcastle United this summer.

Allardyce's exit has left former assistant Sammy Lee to take up the reins with the Trotters and the ex-Liverpool midfielder has been busy trying to add to a squad that has largely been kept intact, although Tal Ben Haim has left for Chelsea.

Lee has brought in JLloyd Samuel to replace Ben Haim, while wingers Daniel Braaten and Christian Wilhelmsson should add some much-needed spark to the midfield, although neither will feature this weekend.

Gavin McCann, Mikel Alonso and Danny Guthrie add further options in the centre of the park, while up front much still rests on the shoulders of Nicolas Anelka.

The France international has been linked with a summer exit from the Trotters, but has so far stayed put and will be hoping to build on 12 goals in 39 appearances last season.

Allardyce has also been busy with his new club, making a number of major signings to try and drive the club forward.

Jose Enrique, Geremi, Claudio Cacapa and David Rozehnal will bring some much-needed steel to the defence, while former Leeds United duo Mark Viduka and Alan Smith add potency in attack.

Of more interest will be how former Manchester City midfielder Joey Barton fits in in midfield in place of Scott Parker, who has left to join West Ham United.

However, Barton will have to wait to make his mark, as a metatarsal injury will keep him out of the action for at least a month, while Michael Owen is likely to be absent due to a thigh problem. Damien Duff, Emre and Celestine Babayaro also all remain sidelined.

Another major blow for Allardyce came when goalkeeper Shay Given suffered another groin problem, which will see him sit out the opening weeks of the new campaign.

Last season the Trotters did the double over Newcastle, winning both games 2-1.
