Match Report

Blackburn Rovers will still be licking their midweek wounds when Newcastle United arrive at Ewood Park.

Mark Hughes' previously in-form side were soundly beaten 4-0 at home by Aston Villa on Wednesday night in a match which also saw captain Ryan Nelsen sent off.

The Rovers skipper will now miss the next three games after being handed a straight red card, but afterwards Hughes refused to believe his side had been four goals worse that their opponents.

He said: "We are not going to beat ourselves up about it - 4-0 looks bad in black and white but confidence won't be dented because of this.

"It was just one of those nights we've got to draw a line under and move on."

It's now four successive games league games without a victory for the Ewood Park club, who remain ninth in the table and adrift of the UEFA Cup places.

However, a number of key players have recently returned from spells on the sidelines and Hughes has plenty of selection options.

Aaron Mokoena could return to a more familiar defensive role in place of the suspended Nelsen, with fit-again midfielders Robbie Savage and Steven Reid both champing at the bit to step up from the bench.

Sam Allardyce will be glad of the opportunity to return to action after a week of uncertainty on Tyneside.

The Magpies boss is already coming under fire from disgruntled fans just four months into his reign following a dismal run of results.

Four games without a win and two heavy home defeats - including last weekend's embarrassingly one sided 3-0 loss to Liverpool - has seen the St James' Park faithful turn on the new manager.

During the week, chairman Chris Mort has backed an increasingly beleaguered Allardyce to bring the good times back to the club, but another poor performance on Saturday could well spell serious trouble for the former Bolton boss.

In the continued absence of Michael Owen through injury, Mark Viduka and Obafemi Martins will continue in attack, while James Milner could return to the starting line-up after impressing off the bench last weekend.

Allardyce also believes Abdoulaye Faye and Steven Taylor could be available after recovering from injuries in what would provide a much-needed double defensive boost.
