90mins

FULL TIME: ASTON VILLA 1-0 NEWCASTLE. All over! Newcastle are relegated from the Premier League with no more than a whimper, and Villa were simply far too good for them today.

90mins

David Edgar collects his second yellow card of the day for again hauling down Young and it goes from bad to worse for Newcastle.

90mins

We are halfway through the four minutes of added time and still Newcastle refuse to throw the ball hopefully into the box - they have simply been outclassed today.

90mins

Newcastle have four minutes to save themselves here.

89mins

Steve Sidwell is on now in place of John Carew for the final moments.

87mins

Where has that football been all afternoon? Butt, Guthrie and Owen combine to give Ameobi a shooting opportunity but he fires over from outside the box.

86mins

Activity in the Villa area and almost the moment for Newcastle as Duff's cross is missed by everyone and bobbles a fraction wide of the far post.

85mins

Villa make their second alteration as Nigel Reo-Coker replaces Stylian Petrov in the middle of the park.

84mins

Every loose ball has been picked up by the Villa midfield - that is worrying enough for Newcastle but the fact they don't even seem to be trying too hard is even worse.

82mins

David Edgar collects the second caution of the afternoon for hauling down Ashley Young - pure frustration.

80mins

That could be the spark! Agbonlahor ties Enrique up in knots on the right flank and finds Carew unmarked three yards out but the big Norwegian makes a mess of the contact and diverts the ball away from goal.

79mins

At the moment Newcastle are, unbelievably, bowing out of the Premier League with a whimper. Surely they have something to give...

76mins

While Shola Ameobi really is Shearer's final throw of the dice as he replaces Mark Viduka for the final 15 minutes.

75mins

Villa are now making their first change of the afternoon as Emile Heskey replaces Craig Gardner.

73mins

The Newcastle fans have fallen deafly silent at Villa Park as their side have failed to even muster a shot off target, let alone on target. Although the news at Sunderland are behind again might improve their mood.

71mins

Into the final 20 minutes at Villa Park and around the Premier League, what drama will unfold? Will any drama unfold? But, most importantly, where?

70mins

That should have been that! A careless pass towards Butt is intercepted by Barry who drives into the box but he can't bend his shot inside the far post.

67mins

Michael Owen is on in place of Kevin Nolan - the final roll of the dice from Shearer?

64mins

Brad Friedel has been untroubled so far in this second period and at the moment it looks as if Villa are just waiting to pick off their second goal at a time of their choosing.

61mins

Big appeal for handball now as Villa work it beautifully again on the left and Shorey drives into the box only to see the ball bobble up onto the hand of Taylor - referee Foy is rightly not interested as Taylor could not get out of the way.

58mins

It looks like one of the Magpies rivals is truly buried now as Junior Stanislas puts West Ham back in front against Boro'. Newcastle themselves though are well and truly on the backfoot.

57mins

The first change of the afternoon comes from Newcastle as the anonymous Lovenkrands is replaced by Jose Enrique.

56mins

James Milner was a Newcastle player back in August but he seems more than a little keen to send them down as he drives for the umpteenth time at the back four and fires marginally wide.

55mins

Newcastle are being run ragged at the moment, whatever Alan Shearer said at half-time has not done the trick - is it time to call for Mr Owen?

53mins

While Young was almost confining Newcastle to the Championship, Sunderland managed to equalise against Chelsea and they look safe again.

52mins

Ashley Young is allowed to run and run and run with the ball, eventually reaching the corner of the box and curling a shot just over the bar.

51mins

Are Boro' pack in the mix? They have drawn level at Upton Park and with Villa in complete control at the moment here they could creep back into the fight.

50mins

All four in the relegation fight are now losing as Nicolas Anelka rattles Chelsea into the lead at Sunderland - surely there will be real drama somewhere eventually.

48mins

Alan Shearer does have options on the bench with Michael Owen and Jonas Gutierrez both potential match-winners, or savers in this case.

46mins

Arguably the biggest 45 minutes in Newcastle's history is underway - can they do it? But if they overcommit then Villa will pick them off.

45mins

HALF TIME: ASTON VILLA 1-0 NEWCASTLE. The biggest team talk to Alan Shearer's short managerial career is about to take place and he has plenty of work to do as Villa have begun to look solid and frankly, like their old selves.

45mins

There will be two minutes of added time.

44mins

Newcastle have been on the ropes but it appears they will manage to get to the break just a goal behind.

41mins

That would have been curtains! Carew sneaks in behind Edgar on the left and finds Agbonlahor whose clever flick bounces agonisingly wide of the far post.

39mins

Newcastle are back in the bottom three then and now they need a goal - as it stands only Sunderland, out of those in the relegation battle, are getting anything today.

38mins

ASTON VILLA 1-0 NEWCASTLE. Oh no! Gareth Barry's speculative drive is heading well wide until Damien Duff sticks out a leg and ends up diverting the ball into the bottom corner, out of the reach of Steve Harper.

36mins

More good news for Newcastle as West Ham take the lead against Middlesbrough - is that the end of the Teesiders hopes?

35mins

Villa are starting to apply more pressure once again and Milner fires in the free-kick but Harper is down well to smother at the near post.

34mins

The first booking of the day is handed out to Steven Taylor after climbing all over Agbonlahor.

31mins

Better from the home side this time as Petrov, Barry and Carew combine to free Young on the left flank but his cross is poor as he hits the legs of Edgar.

29mins

Villa's passing has become a little scratchy after their exceptional start as Newcastle have begun to get about them in the midfield.

27mins

That news from the KC has sent the Newcastle travelling fans into raptures - a bit early for celebration though.

25mins

Salvation? News from elsewhere coming through the Darron Gibson has rocketed Manchester United into the lead at Hull.

24mins

No news from elsewhere with the games involving Hull, Middlesbrough and Sunderland all goalless, so as it stands Newcastle are in the relegation zone.

21mins

Harper again to the rescue! Agbonlahor and Carew in tandem on the left and the pacey England man spots the run of Barry through the middle but Harper gets something in the way to stop the Villa man's shot.

20mins

Ooooh what a strike! Carew's cross deflects for Milner who dallies a little but Duff's poke drops straight to Craig gardner who stings the palms of Harper with a ripping right foot drive.

17mins

Finally a bit of a lull, the tension is unbearable here and both sets of players are responding brilliantly with some good football being played all over the park.

14mins

Another chance! They cannot waste many more, surely. Viduka's delightful backheel drops over the head of Martins but the Nigerian blazes over wildly from six yards.

13mins

The Newcastle fans are making this like a home game as they comfortably out-sing their Villa counterparts - James Milner is getting plenty of stick from the Geordies.

11mins

Unbelievable! Steven Taylor thinks he has given the Magpies the lead with a wonderful swivelling half volley in the area but Cuellar somehow slides in to the goalmouth to divert it away. Brialliant stuff!

10mins

Almost! Duff cuts inside from the left corner of the penalty and fires a low shot that Friedel sees late and can palm only inches wide of the post.

9mins

Newcastle are at last managing to settle a little and some composed defending for the first time from Coloccini begins to build some confidence.

6mins

Apologies for focussing on Mr Coloccini so much early on but Shearer might need to take him off - he looks nervous and he almost allows Agbonlahor in again.

4mins

Coloccini is being given the run around here! Milner this time with a cheeky nutmeg and the Argentine defender has to haul him down.

3mins

Villa are flying! Shorey and Young work well down the left for the latter to clip the ball to the far post where Agbonlahor climbs above Coloccini and finds the top of the net with his header.

2mins

Almost a horrible start for the Magpies as Agbonlahor almost edges past Coloccini inside the box but the big defender did well to just about hold him off.

2mins

I know any Newcastle fans reading today will be anxious to know what is going on elsewhere so I will try to keep you updated with the latest from the bottom of the table.

1mins

We are underway around the country and here in the Second City - Chris Foy is in charge.

0mins

Newcastle: Harper, Edgar, Coloccini, Taylor, Duff, Guthrie, Nolan, Butt, Lovenkrands, Martins, Viduka

0mins

Aston Villa: Friedel, Gardner, Davies, Cuellar, Shorey, Milner, Petrov, Barry, Ashley Young, Agbonlahor, Carew

0mins

The news is not so good for Newcastle though as Michael Owen is only fit for the bench while Damien Duff is forced to deputise at left-back while David Edgar will operate on the other side.

0mins

Martin O'Neill is clearly going all out for a barnstorming end to the finish with his best available line-up on display - bad news for the Toon?

0mins

Welcome to Villa Park where Aston Villa host relegation-threatened Newcastle United in arguably the biggest game of the day - particularly for the visitors.

Match Preview

Newcastle United's 16-year-stay in English football's top-flight could come to an end this weekend at Villa Park.

The wretched home defeat to Fulham last weekend means that, even if the Magpies beat Aston Villa, they could still be relegated as they go into the final round of fixtures in the bottom three.

The omens are not good either as United have won only seven matches all season with only two of those successes - at Portsmouth and West Brom - coming away from St James' Park.

Since the win at The Hawthorns more than three months ago, Newcastle have taken only seven points from 12 matches with their only victory in that sequence being the 3-1 success against Middlesbrough.

That is Alan Shearer's only three-point haul since he was appointed manager last month with his much-heralded appointment doing little to revive the club's fortunes.

Shearer will once again be without the suspended Joey Barton following the former Manchester City midfielder's red card in the 3-0 defeat at Liverpool earlier this month. Sebastien Bassong is also banned after being sent off against Fulham.

However, there is hope that Michael Owen could feature at Villa Park even though he missed the Fulham defeat with a groin strain.

Scans have revealed no significant damage and the striker could now play some part in the crunch clash.

Villa still have hopes of finishing fifth despite enduring a dismal run in the last three months.

Martin O'Neill's side appeared to be on course for a top-four finish when they won 2-0 at Blackburn Rovers in early February but since then it has been downhill all the way.

Within three weeks of that victory they had crashed out of both the FA and UEFA Cups before embarking on a nine-match winless streak in the Premier League.

They managed to beat Hull City earlier this month but that was followed by a defeat at Fulham and draw with Middlesbrough that has left them with a sequence of only one victory from 12 matches.

Martin Laursen was forced to announce his retirement from the game recently because of a recurring knee injury while Wilfred Bouma will also miss the match with the ankle problem that has sidelined him for the last ten months.

Match Report

Alan Shearer's bid to keep Newcastle United in the Premier League ended in dismal failure as the Magpies bowed out after 16 years in the top-flight.

The Newcastle legend, hands on hips, could only watch in dismay as his side waved goodbye to the top-flight along with the 4,000 travelling fans in the ground.

Ironically, their exit was compounded by a tragic first-half own goal by Damien Duff which led to Villa achieving only their seventh home win of the season to complete the campaign in sixth spot.

United, who had David Edgar sent off in the last minute for a second booking, fought bravely to the end but they ultimately paid the price for their dismal performances this season when many disastrous off-field decisions finally came home to roost.

Shearer himself never really had a chance as the demise of Newcastle was deeply ingrained to such an extent that they were generally standing on the relegation trap-door even before his return to St James' Park.

The Magpies were in a hungry mood straight from the start but they couldn't steal a goal despite some spirited attempts in the opening exchanges.

Duff saw his low shot tipped around the post by Brad Friedel, while Carlos Cuellar cleared Peter Lovenkrands' effort off the line.

Shortly afterwards a clever flick on by Mark Viduka created a clear-cut chance for his fellow striker, Obafemi Martins, but the Nigerian lofted his shot over the bar.

Villa, who went into the game with only six home wins to their credit, were often caught short by the urgency displayed by Newcastle and struggled to make an impact.

Their best chance to have taken the lead occurred as easily as the second minute when Gabby Agbonlahor headed onto the top of the netting from Gareth Barry.

Later Newcastle were indebted to their goalkeeper Steve Harper for keeping them in the game.

His first save was when he flicked a powerful drive from Craig Gardner over the bar and a minute later bravely kept out a close range effort from Barry.

But Harper was powerless to save when Duff deflected Barry's powerful shot past his luckless goalkeeper in the 38th minute.

Skipper Nicky Butt conceded a corner which Ashley Young crossed for Stiliyan Petrov pushed into the path of Barry to blast Newcastle out of the Premier League.

Butt was at fault in the 70th minute when he put Barry in possession but the Villa skipper, with only Harper to beat, screwed his shot wide of the post.

United's fate should have been sealed beyond doubt in the 79th minute when big John Carew completely missed his kick in front of goal from Agbonlahor's right-wing cross.

Newcastle gallantly strived for the equaliser but there was no real finishing power from either a subdued Viduka or Martins.

They had their chances in the first half but they were wasted - a fitting appraisal of Newcastle's season in general.
