Match Preview

Mazzarri in warning to Napoli Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri has warned his side not to let "too much desire" get their better of them in their must-win final Europa League Group K clash with Steaua Bucharest on Wednesday night. The Serie A side head into the encounter at the Stadio San Paolo third in the pool, two points behind their second-placed visitors and knowing only a victory will keep alive their European adventure into 2011. Mazzarri knows all about Steaua from an entertaining first meeting on September 30, when Edinson Cavani equalised in the eighth minute of stoppage time as Napoli battled back from three goals down to draw 3-3. And he knows his side cannot afford to let their exuberance result in defensive mistakes. "Steaua are a great squad and we realised that in Bucharest," he said. "In Romania, we found ourselves behind in an unusual manner because of unfortunate events [an Emilson Cribari own goal], but then we managed to redress that. "They will be very motivated. We'll see if they change something tactically. We are fairly prepared for every circumstance. "Wednesday we need to use our hearts and heads and not make life complicated for ourselves by making mistakes because of too much desire to overdo it. "We need a perfect game defensively in order not to run risks. When we do things well we have the ability to put anyone in difficulty. "We have to try to get a goal more than our opponents. We should never overdo it and we need attention to our nerves, tactics and psychology." Mazzarri heads into the match with doubts over striker Ezequiel Lavezzi and midfielder Jose Sosa, who are both struggling with ankle problems. On Lavezzi, the coach said: "He's not very well. We will check during Tuesday's training to see how the ankle is and if he can go on." The 3-3 draw in Bucharest was the first in Marius Lacatus' third stint at the Steaua helm, having replaced Ilie Dumitrescu four days earlier. The 46-year-old expects Wednesday`s game to be another entertaining encounter and has vowed his side will not play for the point that would see them progress to the last 32. He told Radio Kiss Kiss: "We'll come to Naples to play our game. We know the strength of the blue team and the great pressure that the crowd generate at the San Paolo, but we are prepared for anything. "We are not playing for a draw - that would not be smart. "We know this game will not end 0-0. "Who I am afraid of from Napoli? I won't mention names, but the team has four or five players who can change the game at any moment."

Match Report

Cavanai leaves it late for Napoli Edinson Cavani scored at the death to hand Napoli a 1-0 victory over Steaua Bucharest and a place in the last 32 of the Europa League. Steaua thought they had succeeded in holding the Italians to a draw at the Stadio San Paolo which would have been good enough for them to progress but Uruguay forward Cavani had the last say deep in injury time. Napoli ended the game with 10 men after captain Paolo Cannavaro was handed his marching orders one minute from time for a second yellow card. With the result, Napoli finished second in Group K, one point clear of Steaua, and joined pool winners Liverpool in the next round. The Italians went into the encounter knowing victory was a must but they found a resilient Steaua, who defended deeply and hardly threatened Napoli's goal. The hosts enjoyed a strong start and Cavani sent out a warning in the 10th minute with his left-footed strike going over the bar. At the other end, Romeo Surdu wasted a good chance with his effort from the heart of the area going off target. In the 34th minute, Michele Pazienza forced Steaua goalkeeper Cristian Tatarusanu to stretch fully to clear his 20-yard strike. On the stroke of half-time, Ricardo's header from Iasmin Latovlevici's cross was saved by Napoli goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis. Napoli controlled possession after the restart and could have gone in front in the 52nd minute. Marek Hamsik fed Cavani inside the area and his close-range effort was kept out by Tatarusanu. Five minutes later, Cavani's header from Christian Maggio's cross went over the bar. Napoli continued to surge forward but struggled to get past Steaua's defensive wall and when they did, they did not find the target. With 13 minutes remaining, Cavani nodded wide from a good position after a great cross from Zuniga. In the 82nd minute, Cavani could not believe his bad luck when his right-footed effort from the edge of the area struck the post with Tatarusanu already beaten. Napoli's efforts finally paid off just when it seemed they would exit the competition. Cavani got his head to Hamsik's cross and beat Tatarusanu to bring the stadium to life and become the only Italian team to reach the next stage of the Europa League.
