Hapal not keen on pointless adventure
MSK Zilina boss Pavel Hapal is desperate for his team to avoid the ignominy of finishing their debut Champions League group stage campaign without a point.
The Slovakian champions are yet to get off the mark in Group F heading into their final fixture at home to Spartak Moscow night.
It has been a rough introduction to life in Europe's premier club competition for Hapal's side who have conceded 17 goals in five games, including a 7-0 drubbing by Marseille in their last home encounter.
Unsurprisingly, the Sosoni are therefore condemned to finish bottom of the group with Spartak six points ahead to sew up a Europa League place.
"We want to win," Hapal said at a press conference.
"While we have had to drink from a bitter cup in this competition so far, on Wednesday we want to be victorious.
"It may still be a success if we draw, because that will be a point. But the level of that success will depend on how well we play."
Despite their poor record there have been moments to savour for Zilina during the campaign, most notably when they led at leaders Chelsea a fortnight ago.
Babatounde Bello fired them ahead before second-half goals from Daniel Sturridge and a late Florent Malouda winner denied the minnows a famous point.
"Sure, we wanted to have some points on the board before the last game. We have played well enough for that to be the case," Hapal added.
"For example in Marseille and London we could have got points while at home to Chelsea we also had a good game.
"We were completely overrun in Moscow and at home to Marseille. We regret these defeats, especially the loss (to Marseille) in front of our home fans."
Hapal will be without Stefan Zosak and Admir Vladavic for the game, which is set to be played in sub-zero conditions.
The temperature in Zilina has fallen as low as minus 15 in recent days, although such conditions are unlikely to worry the Russian visitors.
While Valeri Karpin's side may be used to such low temperatures anyway, the team has spent the past week preparing for the game across the border at the training facilities of the Hungary national team.
Karpin believes the base has provided the ideal preparation as they aim to sign off their final match of 2010 with a win.
"Hungary was the right choice. We are only a few hours by bus from Zilina," Karpin told the club's official website www.spartak.com.
"It is our last match of the season and we have been able to train at a very modern facility.
"We almost feel like we are at home here."
Crowd trouble mars Spartak win
Spartak Moscow came from behind to seal a 2-1 Champions League Group F win on a night which saw fans from 2018 World Cup host nation Russia bring shame on European football.
Tomas Majtan headed Slovakian minnows MSK Zilina in front just after half-time but Brazilians Alex and Ibson turned the game around by the hour mark.
Ibson's night turned sour as he was sent off 12 minutes from time, but his sin was dwarved by those of the Spartak fans which brought about a 20-minute delay early in proceedings.
Within minutes of the match kicking off, Dutch referee Kevin Blom led both sets of players off the field as flares were thrown onto the pitch from the Spartak section of the crowd.
The visiting team re-emerged to plead with their own fans for calm, only to be met by a fresh barrage.
Eventually, though, the game was able to restart and Dmitri Kombarov shot over from close range for Spartak.
Ibson was similarly wasteful, skewing wide from a good position, before Kirill Kombarov flashed an effort wide from range.
Marek Suchy blocked Roman Gergel's effort at the other end before Zilina's Lubomir Guldan was booked for fouling Ibson, who teed up Alex from the resulting free-kick. The Brazilian, though, fired over.
Gergel was again off target before Suchy blocked Pavol Poliacek's shot, Babatounde Bello blazing the rebound over.
Alex shot wide from long range and team-mates Aiden McGeady and Yevgeni Makeev followed suit as half-time arrived goalless.
Zilina had been unable to impose themselves on the game for much of that first period, but took the lead three minutes into the second. Robert Jez crossed from the right and Majtan's downward header beat keeper Andrei Dikan and found the net.
Dikan was then forced to tip Tomas Oravec's fierce drive over the bar, and also gathered Bello's effort before the visitors levelled in the 54th minute as Alex finished low from the left of the penalty area.
Gergel blocked Alexander Shyeshukov's drive but the second Spartak goal was not long in coming, Alex turning provider for compatriot Ibson to finish from close range on the hour.
Gergel shot over and Oravec and Guldan's long-range volleys went wide, while Ibson was off target at the other end.
The latter was then dismissed for a bad foul on Oravec, before substitute Momodou Ceesay wasted Zilina's best chance of an equaliser when he headed Emil Rilke's corner wide from close range.
